Just stumbled upon, as far as i can tell, an unissued izhvesk sks. Numbers that i can see all match, and it's in remarkable good shape, though missing a little blue off of the bayonet lug and has a MINOR mark on the stock, looks like it was put on a rack and taken off a rack, but seems unfired. It has a hardwood stock, not laminate. Asking price is $250 no tax or shipping or anything. Good deal?

There was a stamp of some kind on the right of the stock, like a circle or something, but i can't remember...I had my camera, should have taken a couple pics :( I didn't pull it out or anything, but the magazine didn't have an ugly weld spot on the bottom.

Now, I was wondering about the unissued thing, non refurbished....Is it acceptable to have an electropenciled number ANYWHERE? Or si that a sure sign of refurb? The numbers on the reciever and bottom of mag match, and i vaguely remember something electropencilled on the gas cylinder?

edit: Just been looking around a bit, and it looks like with shipping and taxes and such, it's going to cost me more than 250 to get a run of the mill refurb anyway, and if this is a refurb, it looks absolutley spectacular. I think i may just go for it before it sells to someone else, and figure it all out later....

A non-refurbed can have EP'd gas tube and sight bottom. Which year Izzy is it?

Not sure. I figure everyone's gotta get lucky sometime (49?)...didn't write down the s/n. Lol i want to phone the guy but it's past bedtime....

You will find the original serial # electropenciled on the gas piston and on the underside of the gas tube and rear sight. It was the only way to mark these parts; it doesn't indicate that they are "force matched" by any means....If you see stamped numbers that are "struck through" and new ones stamped or EP'd, then, obviously, it has been refurbed.
If the metal has its original bluing (not Duracoated with the crummy black paint), has a shiny bayonet bolt/ carrier, then it has not been refurbed. I own examples of each-my hardwood '54 Tula unrefurbed cost me $240 and my refurbed lammy '50 Tula cost me $220. You say it's an Izzy? Buy it now, or I will....those are not as common as the Tulas.

Semi New sks...average deal...

BAH! Turns out I waited a little too long, and it's gone. I did manage to find another one, locally, and I jumped on it.

it's a 53 Tula. Hardwood (looks prettier than the laminated IMO). Yep, it's a refurb, but as far as i can tell, the only part that's been changed is the stock. The original number for sure has Xs over it, with the new one stamped underneath. All other numbers match, though. And it does have the little [\] stamp on the cover.

The only part that has that gross paint on it is the barrel, everything else is still blued, so i'm thinking it'll need a stripping and re blue at some point to make it look a little nicer. Wierd thing, i though, it's got a little of the black paint on the top handguard, like it was painted with the rifle standing up and fully assembled? Wierd. Bolt carrier, bolt, and bayonet are all shiny and nice looking. Looks like it was "used" as in handled a lot, but not really shot much. I'm taking it to the range tomorrow. Picked up 200 rounds or czech milsurp ammo, so i'm hoping it'll last the afternoon.

Semi related (to the ammo, anyway, not the rifle), I found a neat little place tucked away for anyone on the island. North Shore Lawn and Garden in North Rustico. Kevin seems a pretty decent guy, likes to chat from what i could tell for the 15 or 20 minutes that i was there. Showed me his sweet AR, and i didn't ask if it was for sale...i don't wanna know :)

That's what my 5 year old is telling me. He takes a stripped clip and hold it out to me, and says "Look, dad..you open the..uhm....bolt? Then you put this metal piece in the back and push them right in, then BAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAPBAP!!!!!" I look at him, and gently pat him on the head. "You're such a good boy."

Here's some pics from after getting home from the range today. Little guy really likes the "army guy gun" and wanted to shoot it, but i told him he had to wait till he could fit the butt in his shoulder and reach the trigger at the same time.
