Hey fellas. Going to buy a new semi this spring. Will use it primarily as a back up clays gun to my Beretta 686. Once in a while will take her hunting for grouse and Pheasant. Always loved Remington 1100/11-87 but been hearing things lately about shoddy workmanship. I like the 391 BUT have seen a couple with feeding problems(carrier) and those people waited MONTHS for a fix. Any opions are welcome.

There are lot of 391s at our club (including mine) and none that I know of have had the carrier problem. I do know a Browning Gold owner who has had some feeding issues.
There are also a few guys with recently produced Remington semi-autos who are having an assortment of issues with them. I also have a recently-produced 870 Wingmaster that is a testament to the downward spiral of Remington's quality control.
Buy the 391. It is the best semi-auto for sporting clays on the market today. The Browning Gold and the Benelli SuperSport would be tied for second place.

I shot a lefty 11-87 for this, my first year of clays shooting. I've put probably 10K rounds downrange, and I have been quite happy with it. The factory o-ring didn't last long, and the old 2-piece piston came apart around halfway through the season. Both replacement parts (total cost ~$20) have been holding up perfectly.
However, after shooting a 391 Teknys for a couple of days on the skeet field this fall, I will definitely be buying one for next season. It points very naturally (similar to the 11-87) and seems to have a more solid feel and definitely a far better reputation for reliability.

Will be driving to Petawawa in Apr. and will probably make a trip to Epps to check out the 391's. Shot a Teknys Gold last fall and was somewhat impressed with the feel. Don't like the garish finish though the wood was veeery nice. This one had the carrier problem and waiting to see if it's fixed yet. The gas system seems overly complicated compared to the 11-87 but have read good things about the 391 reliability. Leaning more and more toward Beretta. Noticed Reminton prices have just taken a hike. Might be the straw that broke the camels back for those like myself who are still on the fence between the two. Thanks for the responses fellas.
A few shooters at our club are shooting the Teknys and I don't like the bling either particularly in a gun that will also double as a field gun. My 391 Optima is the basic sporting gun with the matte receiver. You could save the money on the Teknys and instead treat yourself to a custom stock from Rich Cole if you really wanted nice wood. If you go to pick one up ask to have the trigger group removed, only takes a second, and set the carrier on a flat surface to see if it is twisted. It will "rock" back and forth if it is. If it doesn't than your in business.
As for the stock finish I agree and disagree. The wood on my tekny's would put put most o/u in the 5-7k range to shame and the gloss finish looks awsome. That said sweety palms or rain mean a slippey stock if you dont have gloves.

The 391 is a great gun and does everything I need it to do and if it fits you will likely serve you as well or better than any other semi on the market. I shoot at a small club but I bet there are 6 391's shooters there, all love them.
Right know though I'm taking a serious look at the Remington 1100 G3. 1100's always fit me well and its a lot less money than the 1100 comp that doesn't have the 3" capability that the G3 has..
