After my dissapointment with the leupold HD $$$$$$ spotting scope here is my "new" system...Swarovski HD 65mm spotting scope and Manfrotto 718SHB the new "stay on case is here in the morning...

So far it seems very clear ,crisp , stable....bring on the stone sheep..

HMMM range no..HOWEVER I did look at a car 3 blocks away...and could CLEARLY read the spelling on the 1" vehicle nameplate on 20x didnt even need to go 30-40-50-60x..extremely clear..next week is shooting time at the range 200 yards with .338 (not exactly small caliber )however I dont know any spotting scope with a better reputation for clarity..

The issues with Leupold were numerous..first the design..the front 60mm objective ?lens was too close to the front of the case allowing any stray light to shine directly on the lens ..lots of sun flare resulting in poor washed out images...then the rear rubber lens cup kept splitting.. 6 in 7 months they just kept sending me more...then the qd fast mounting system was designed? or mnf with excessive tolerences allowing the scope to vibrate or move constantly in even a mild wind...this vibration caused me lots of HEADACHES as my eyes tried to stabalize the image..and did nothing in allowing me to use the unit for long at any given time.

HOWEVER when NOT pointed anywhere near a bright sun...and with no wind and a fresh eyecup the optics were every bit as good as the SWAROVSKI..for 1/2 the cost..

Canfire..I cant afford NOT to..it takes valuable time and $$$$ to get to where I sheep..deer..bear..moose..caribou etc etc hunt and my legs are shot I need a new knee on the left leg and my right leg has irreversable "compartment syndrome" painful...and I am extremelly overweight...I hike back in and thats the most I can do..so I cant be travelling 3 miles every day up and down trying to find a stone sheep..so nI must rely on exellent optics to "brring the animal to me" then when I do finally find a good ram I will have the effort and ability left in me to make another long careful arduous stalk and STILL have the ability to hike out..Its not the BEST system but its what I am left with:redface:

I cant buy 2 new legs..I can work a few extra shifts and get the optic advantage...

The other leupold HD was sent back for a complete refund by Leupold CANADA....Leupold USA were very snooty and while admitting they had a problem with design and mnf. they would ONLY keep replacing parts with the same design flawed parts..while leupold CANADA had me ship the unit back and they credited the store I bought it from with a complete refund..the store KEPT the first taxes and then sold me the Swarovski...

Srupp,
Pretty sweet set up, I put my old Bauch and lomb on a manfrotto 442, and I put my cameras on it to, good price for the tripod , seems I paid 4 time what that one cost, but it was a while ago, cool setup.
I have been using Leopold fro 40 yrs and I have no complaints, just go a pair of Binos on sale and I won't complain, 800 bucks for something that is going to bounce around the floor of the truck, and 2 of my buddies spent 2wice that and more, one swarofski and 1 a pair if liecas, and I can't see the difference, and none of them will ever break, anyway great equipment...

Have you considered a pair of BIG EYES?

Either high mag binos (say 16X) or two spotting scopes held together to act as binos.

LR sheep glassing can take a very long time and looking with one eye does get tiring. I find binos to be way more comfy then use the spotting scope for the final decision.

I have really enjoyed using a Leica Trinovid and for my eyes/glasses, better then the Swaro. I am presently using a Pentax ED which does an excellent good job but the eyepiece is not as glass friendly as I would have liked.

For general LR glassing out to 1km, I use a Nikon 12x porro prism binos. They offer superb glass. The fact that these cost next to nothing is amazing. However, at your distances and needs, I am sure the high end Nikons would be much better.
