So a week or so ago, I picked up a SR-22. It was a toss up between this and the 597 VTR, but the VTR did not have a collapsable stock, and I have had 3 reports of them being discontinued. So, to the Ruger I go...
Ruger SR22...only additional accessory is a bolt/action lock. 10rd rotary magazine is standard. Prices vary, so shop around. I was using a Redfield scope, but this is about the .22.
Playing house ninja, I had it somewhat set up for my liking...but boy was I wrong. Got it to the range today and here's a quick report.
1x10 + 2x25 rd mags. 1 Butler Creek, the 2nd...cannot remember the name. The turn dial (sorry, again, cannot remember name) 'speed loader' worked without issue.
10 rd mag worked flawlessly with 10 rds
25 Butler worked flawlessly with 25 rds
Other jammed first full mag, part of 2nd mag, and 2x later on. A total of 525 lead "Blazer" 22lr (40 g lead nose, 1235 fps) or 1 full box was shot in 1 sitting. Ammo was/is on sale, which turns into something like 0.04 a shot, so I bought another block or 5250 rds on the way home...
Trigger is crisp, but a little on the heavy side, so this will be improved.
Playing house ninja and actually shooting are different, so I had to move the scope as my glasses were affecting the eye relief. This part is the only real bad part for me...going to have to wear the glasses at home and find 'that spot' where my scope should be. The end of the barrel has the screwn on piece which kept working loose. So this will have to fixed before the next day out. Also weight...compared to a tact'ed up 10/22 mine is a tank, but felt solid. The button to hold OPEN the action is an easy find and easy to operate. The CLOSE action button is a tricky piece and probaly couldn't be done with gloves. There are improvements, ie, to be able to close the held open action by pulling on the bolt handle, which I will get around to...one of these days.
No problems with fit and finish. Everything joined, and worked how it should with no pinches, noises or parts falling out/off EXCEPT for...see above. Action was quiet, follow up shots were easy, weight, although beefier, was well distributed.
My "Out of the Box" score for Ruger's Sr-22 is a 8.5.
I would recommend buying this, but remember it's limitations and you will be happy. This little rifle probably won't get you to Bisley, but, it will take a beating and keep on shooting, and that's what you really want anyways.
