New Stag arms upper with pitted worn out barrel?

I am wondering if this is some kind of mistake. I ordered a Stag arms upper about a month and a half ago and just got around to cleaning it out to go shooting tomorrow. Discovered inside that the rifling is mangled. It looks like an old .303 that had a million rounds though it. This was supposed to be a brand new upper. I got it from one of our advertisers. I wont say who because I don't believe it has anything to do with them. Tomorrow morning i am going to be giving them a call. Really goddam disappointed. This will put me back another two months. I will try and get a picture.

The longer i sit here thinking about this the madder i am getting. The fact this could pass a quality control inspection is beyond me.
 
yes. but unfortunately i am using a phone as a camera. You can get the idea from what there is in the pic and the description i gave. Even as it gets closer to the muzzle the rifling looks like it has more wear. It has all the signs of a shot out barrel but in a new upper. IS this possible?
 
I am giving it a good cleaning now and once the hoppes solvent hit it, the patches started turning black. It still looks pitted but it is not as bad looking as it was. I am going to continue on and see how it looks by the time i go to bed. In all my life and over a hundred firearms through my possession i have never seen anything like this on a new rifle. And yes I did run a number of oiled and then dry patches down the barrel before i looked up it the first time.

It is still coming out. It looks like some kind of polishing compound. Its getting better. Im still going to call them tomorrow and ask them what the frig. but this might be ok.
 
ok, last update. The patches are now coming out relatively clean. The bore however is pitted. The surface of the metal looks like leather. What I think they did was test fire the upper with lapping compound or some sort of abrasive polish in the barrel. Severely disappointed.
 
It looks like they forgot to chrome line it. Is that the "M4" upper or one of the other ones? Check to see if it's supposed to be a chrome lined barrel, and look at the edge of the chamber, where the bolt meets with it. If there's no ring of shininess there then there's no chrome (which I think there's supposed to be).

Weird thing to forget.

I have not fired a single round through this. I was doing the initial clean up this evening to go out for the first time with it tomorrow and discovered the sewer pipe bore. There even appears to be what looks like a wrinkle in the rifling grove about mid way down. Its going to be an interesting explanation when i hear it.

Thats the plan stan. I just wanted to share my disappointment.
 
that looks like chrome lining, which makes it even more bizarre that there's some damage to the bore...chrome lining is like 75 HRC, it's unbelievably strong. Whatever did that to your bore must've been at tremendous speed (much more than a proof load) and incredibly corrosive. Seriously, I once read an article that I can't find now, about a guy with an Arsenal SLR-107FR or SGL-31, and he let it rust after shooting corrosive ammo, something like 2 years, and the chrome in the bore looked infinitely better than yours. His actually looked fine once he cleaned it, and I think his was easier to clean than yours too.

Something is really wrong here man, there should be a little residue in the barrel from the HPT/MPI, what you have is ridiculous. Let us know what Stag says, they actually have a really good reputation.
 
It is most likely dried out preservative oil mingled with residue from test firing, or the Friday shift test fired it with oil in the barrel. This is not uncommon.

It is a bit of a PITA to clean. You will need to use a brass brush and some patience.

I got about 60 patches through it so far and used a plastic brush about every 5th patch. The patches are coming out almost clean and the bore is still looking like crap... I was using Hoppes 9. Maybe i will put some Eds Red through it.
 
So i just got off the phone from a manager this morning and they told me to shoot it and see what happens. They said sometimes what looks like pitting is just the chrome plating and that it will smooth out after a couple hundred rounds. So i am now heading out to fire a few.
