I just got a new Stevens 200 in .223 based on the reputation they have. So I went to the range today and "attempted" to fire it for the first time. No BANG , just click. On closer inspection I noted that the bolt handle does not appear to turn all the way down. The 3 point safety seems stop just before going into full fire position, The firing pin does try to go forwarded but does not contact the primer. I closely examined the bolt and made sure the lugs were lined up correctly. They seem to only fit the action one way. Bolt goes in and comes out of action. The bolt goes all the way in.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong here before I have to send it for servicing ?

PS this is not my first rifle , I have numerous and have had them for many years.

Bold Badger hit the nail on the head, happens alot, people bring new guns back because they don't shoot......the screws from the scope bases are preventing bolt from functioning.

The Rear screw from the forward scope base in too long! Take it out and check to see if you have bolt closure, shorten it and replace it.!

That was it guys. Thanks. 3 seconds on the grinder and its fixed. :dancingbanana:

Probably did not need to grind. All the screws look the same, but often if you take a really close look one will be slightly shorter. This is the one that is for the area over the locking area. I do not know what bases you used, but leupold often provides one shorter just for this problem.

Enjoy the Stevens .223. I love mine, and have made several hits on gophers at irresponsible distances this year.

I checked them all. I was surprised because you would think the base manufacturer would sort that out. I also searched all my other rings and bases and could not find anything else to fit. Anyway its good to go now.

I would put some sort of rust preventive on that screw you had to shorten. Just so it doesn't rust and seize in the hole. Maybe a small dab of paint and let it dry good before reinstalling it. Just a thought.

I am thinking of getting one of these in a 22-250 anyone got one? also what kind of after market is there of the 200? like bolt handles, barrels, triggers, stocks, etc? Is there any savage that you can use parts from?

Yes. The rifle is a Savage. As far as barrels go, keep in mind that Savage uses two shank diameters.
