My workhorse has been a Winchester 70 in 7mm Rem Mag, almost 10 years old now and must have been one of the first stainless/all weather stock combos.

In all honesty, looking at some of the synthetic firearm stocks coming out now I think it needs to be spruced up a little because the plastic stock might be functional, but sure isn't pretty.

What are some aftermarket synthetic stocks being produced now to modernize a little?

PS - And yes, I'm sentimentally attached to the action/barrel. 5 bucks above 120 B&C :)

I've installed two HS Precision stocks to Remington 700s. Both were, as advertised, drop in fit. Incorporate aluminum bedding blocks, and are very rugged. Lots of finishes to select from. And price out pretty decent compared to some of the popular lines. Might add a tad bit of weight though.

Bell & Carlson also worth a look, too...

McMillan makes at least 10 Winchester patterns. 24 Hour campfire seems to be the best pricing available, and they handle the import paperwork as well. Specing out a stock the way you want it in the first place will save you money.

I put a Macmillan Model 70 Hunting stock on my SS synthetic Model 70. Below is the description from the Macmillan web site.

"Model 70 Hunting stock duplicated the factory standard Model 70 stock with a monte carlo cheekpiece. It can be used for any late Model 70 as well as any Pre-64 Model 70. It will accept up to a #5 barrel contour and may come as a blind magazine for the Ranger Series Model 70's, as well as with a standard hinged floorplate. Available in right hand only."

I also ordered it with a 1" recoil pad. If you like the feel of the factory stock this is the one to get. The quality is excellent - not cheap - but you get what you pay for.

McMillian gets my vote to...I have purchased 4 now through Rick on 24hourcampfire and have had great service. You won't be disappointed with McMillian.

If spruced up and synthetic is what you are after, may I suggest calling D'Arcy Echols in Millville Utah about his McMillan stock built to his specs. D'Arcy is one of the best stock makers, if not the best, in the world today. It can be had in both fiberglass or graphite and is the finest synthetic stock I have ever handled and shot. It is made only for the Model 70.

Here are a few pictures.

For comfortable handling and outstanding recoil management, my favourite stock is the Hogue overmolded rubber stock. You can get them with pillar bedding or, if you don't mind a bit more weight, with an aluminum bedding block molded in. Plus, you get the distinction of carrying and using the ugliest aftermarket stock on the market.

If you want something that doesn't make you vomit a little bit in the back of your throat each time you look at it, the Boyd's JRS stock is sleek and attractive. I love the fit and feel of it. I've ordered three and found that they all required very minimal bedding work to fit perfectly.
