Hi - Well, finally got my Boyd's Target Varminter after 10 months - now it's bedded, and going to do the finishing work next.

Savage 12FVSS in .223
Rifle Basix Sav1 trigger
Burris Rings
Bushnell 3200 10X40
Boyd's Pepper Laminate Target Varminter

This started life as a stock Savage, bought from the ORA.

Next - hmmm, new barrel in a 1 in 7 twist, or new glass. Depends on what Santa brings.

Ron,
That looks great. Glad customs finally got off their asses and released it. I would ask Santa for a new barrel if I were you. It doesn't matter how well you can see the target, but it does matter that rifle puts them were you want.

I used Marine Spar Varnish on my Boyds JRS. What a shine. Completely impervious to weather. You have to thin it down a bit, but it works fantastic.

The true oil will be nice too. Make sure you rub it in completely and use many coats.

Tfunfer - at the risk of opening a can of worms and opinions, I'm going to be finishing it with Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil.

Thanks.
I am planning on picking up one of Sharp Shooter Supply's MTR stocks for my Savage Mark 2 .22LR, but I wasn't sure what to finish the wood with.
Post some more pics when you finished the stock. It is looking good!

Worth the wait

Dear Ron,

Certainly looks like it was worth the wait.

Combined with your last 1000 yard score of 73.5, there is just no way to keep and good man and his fancy schamcy rifle down.:D

I use Tru oil on all my laminated stocks. Works wonderfully. I like to give a light coat every now and then to keep in showroom condition. Easy to use. The more you apply, the better it looks.

I am sure you will bed it. Pretty much a necessity with these stocks.

Keep the orig barrel and get a scope. That barrel will shoot to 1/2 MOA, maybe a bit better with 75gr Amax and Varget. Without a good quality high mag scope, you can't see well enough to outshoot the rifle.

The Fclass X ring is 1/2 MOA. Very very few shooters can drive that well even with the best of rifles.

Well, just finished coat# 4 of Tru Oil, was bedded last week, should have a new set of photo's up tomorrow - sure is looking nice though! smooth finish, and I really like the look.

Updated Nov 7 - Nearly Done (image heavy)

Well, here is the progress - sanded with 120 grit, 150 grit, 220 grit, wet to "whisker the wood" and sanded then with 400 grit.

5 coats of Birchwood Casey Tru Oil, rubbed with 0000 steel wool between each coat.

I think I want to rub it with the steel wool one more time, and then use the stock sheen in it - I like it shiny, but find I was not as careful as I should have been on last coat of oil, trying to cover a couple of spots in the crevasses etc.

Let the truoil harden for a few weeks to a month. Then go over with the fine steel wool and a very light oil coat rubbed in. I found that really got the shine out. Much better then using the stock sheen/wax.

After using the stock, the gloss would fade a smidge. Rubbed with a soft towel and reoil. Twice a year maintenance and the appearance is great.

FYI.

looks really classy

I was wondering how the fit up was on that stock and what was required, and as well how heavy it is.. I have a 12fvss coming and from what I hear it might need a stock upgrade.
I really like the look of that stock compared to some of the others I have seen on the web. might try one of the cheap bell and carlson ones from cabelas if nothing else. any opinions are much appreciated
this will be my first savage!!

Hi Redlaker1 - The fit was pretty good, when it was bedded it needed a bit of wood removal from around the recoil lug to get it to drop a bit, and a bit from the barrel channel to ensure the barrel was free floated. Glass bedded now.

It's fairly heavy, have not weighed it, but definitely more than with the "stock" stock on the 12FVSS. Mine is an older model, pre-accutrigger, so not sure if they've changed since then. Even with the old stock and handloads, it ran very well.

Only pain was the 10 month wait - and now looks like Boyd's is not making that model anymore. I've seen a lot of guys are using Bell and Carlson, also might want to look at Richard's Microfit, I know someone who used them on and really liked it.

I'd shoot your Savage first and see if you want to replace the stock or if you are happy with the outcome.
