Just picked up my new toy from the gunsmith, a rem 600 mohawk with a stainless 18.5" 458 socom barrel and custom break. Haven't had a chance to shoot it much but it may be my hunting rifle next year. Makes a great bush gun and came in pretty light actually. P.s. i didn't defile a mint rem 600, it was heavily modified when i got it. Updated on page 2 now has detachable mags

Then which one should one choose, 458 socom or 450 bushmaster?
i had an ar in 458 already so i had components to reload. 450 bushmaster comes in factory bolt action rifles and factory ammo is available. 458 socom is reload only in canada from what ive seen. Its really up to the shooter. I enjoy 458 so i stuck with it

How does it feed? And what work if any was needed to get it to feed?

It has a single shot block in it at the moment until i decide on a magazine option. It should feed from any double stack 223 mags without modification. Im debating a blind mag or hacking up a magpul bottom metal for detachable mags.

Very cool little gun and cartridge. This idea has been simmering on my back burner for awhile now...but there are always a few pots boiling over there, so...:)

I hope you follow up in this thread with some test results and developments. Good luck!

Well after lots of grinding and epoxy and a couple different designs, i now have detachable magazines. I was able to use an ar style magazine catch and inlet it into the stock and with some springs and washers its in there. I also modified a metal trigger guard to add some stability on the back of the mag. Its a little rough around the edges for now but some sanding and touch up it will be all done. Mags fit tight and straight. Very happy with how it turned out.

So fricking cool, nice work!

The trigger guard is a bit of a hack job but you can build something in the future once you've used it for a bit.
I'm putting together trigger guards for a 788 to push the trigger forward, had parts cut out of 6061 with water jet, lots of ways to build stuff.

That's a nice little thumper project fer sure! The wee beasty should be a nicely accurate platform to launch hardcast bombs from.;)

Hard to argue the advantages of the .458 SOCOM over more traditional rounds like the .45-70, .458x2 American & .458 Win mag. when it comes to building a compact & light rifle on short action bolt, auto or lever guns like the Browning BLR. Any of those actions with a .473" sized bolt face will do.

Did you try using the factory magazine and follower to see if you could get them to feed before going DM?
I like the idea of this little round, but I would want to make sure I could get it to feed from the factory adl or BDL setup before moving forward.

Another option you could try if you aren't happy with your bottom metal is ptg makes a dm unit for the m7. I know you can run a m7 bottom metal on a 600/660 if you drill and tap a new rear screw and use a m7 trigger. Of course the stock would require some fitting aswell.... Just another option.

Yes the trigger guard is far from perfect but it works for now, was a quick addition. The stock one was very small after the mag was put in. This was the prototype to see if it works at all and now i know it does ill get another floorplate and try again. Theres a few mistakes that i was able to fix with epoxy but ill make a nice clean one soon.

The rifle was a single shot benchrest when i got it so i never had an original magazine to try out. You would likely have to fit the feed lips for such a wide round. Thanks for the suggestion i didn't really look into an aftermarket one.
