I am having some trouble finding a load for my tikka 30-06 i am using 165 serria boattail bullets and imr4350 powder i shot an moa group with 53 grains and a sub moa group with 53.5 grains with full length sized cases now i shot about 40 rounds on a warm day so i am wondering bout barrel heat yesterday i shot a group without warming the barrel at all with neck sized cases and 53.5 grains of powder and the group opened up to about 3 inches now i am changing jobs and i won't have time to do as much shooting as i would like as i'll be working camp at 2 weeks in 1 out so any help with possable reasons for the changes and recipes would be greatly appreciated thanks all

I've learned that due to the short mag on the T3's you need a warmer load to compensate for the restricted seating depth.

FYI, my A-bolt in .06 now shoots 165 Interbonds at ~ 2850fps using 57grn IMR 4350, so as 604 suggests, work up to it, that's a stiff load for sure.

I am using the lee loading manual and it tells me the max overall length is 3.34 i am seating my loads at 3.31-3.32 inches i am thinking that a hot load is goin to be what i need thanks for the advise

Is that all one sentence??

Hodgdon lists 56gr of IMR 4350 as the minimum, and 60gr as the max for that bullet. Not enough pressure can be just as dangerous as too much pressure.

If you want consistent groups, you need to work that load up to 57-58gr, IMO. Not surprising to me that it won't group...

In the 30-06, 57 grains of IMR 4350 is generally regarded as close to a max load with 180 grain bullets, so 165's will usually take a couple of grains more. 53 grains will have you at 300 Savage velocities, and probably does not even obturate the case fully. I would work up, as suggested. Regards, Eagleye.

At 3.340" COL you MIGHT be a hair long for your clip. And I wouldn't go over 57 grs with the 165 - that's 100% case capacity so you need to seat to the full 3.340". Drop tube will help, but 2875 fps or so is all you'll wring out of a 26" bbl, let alone a 24". RL22 can get you up to the 3000 range, but the powder you're using has '06 written all over it. And we've noticed too that Tikka's seem to like a warmer load as mentioned.

where can i find more accurate load info these loads a hotter the the max loads my book suggests. according the the lee mordern reloading manual for a 165 gr bullet with imr4350 start load is 51.8 gr and the never excede is 54 gr

Quite often you'll spot discrepancies like that depending on the source. Hodgdon's website is very good, and their start loads are sometimes as high as many so-called DNE loads. Norma tends to be considerably hotter than most - I guess they're less sensitive to insane liability suits across the pond - remember the MacDonald's fiasco with the woman and the spilt coffee? Any idiot can find a way to abuse the simplest instructions and then blame anyone in proximity but themselves. Get as many reload manuals as you can and read them all then do it again. and again. There's a lot to it if you want there to be. Cross referencing common loadings should get you started right. Load workup is for the individual rifle - no two rifles are the same, even if they have consecutive serial numbers and were built right after each other.....that's the fun in it plus the challenge.

The Internet is your friend: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp It's always a good idea to cross reference several reloading manuals.

thanks 604 do you know if there is any hardcopies that comfrim these loads my roommates serria reloading manual states that the max load is 56 grains

I tend to go with Hodgdon's data, as I'm using their powder (IMR or H). For the most part, jacketed 165 spitzer boat-tail bullets are all the same.

thnaks on the hodgons powder reference and no i didn't hvae the rifle tht far apart for cleaning just removed the bolt to run patchs through the bore

Nosler Ed. 6 (hard copy... p.378)

30-06, 165 Nosler Partition ... max load 57.0 of IMR 4350 ( most accurate load & powder tested) max load 57.5 of H4350 ( most accurate load of this powder) 2832 / 2872 f.p.s. respectively, 24" test bbl.

I'm shooting 165gr Hornady SST with 56.5 gr of H414 and getting sub MOA and 2930 fps at 100 yds. Just info, may not work with your gun.

the guys from Sierra recommended me the 175 gr. bullets for my tikka t3 30-06... I asked them between the 155gr. the 165 gr. and 175 gr... with the twist rate of 1:11 they told me that there choice would be with no doubt the 175 gr... and wiht the 175 gr. they recommend to star working up from 53 gr.. so you can surely go as far as 59 gr... Same thing for your 165 gr..

I will be doing some range work tomorrow with my '06, going to try some bullets up to 200 grains, Sierra Game Kings, Hornady SST, Speer SPBT, and some good ol Corelokts. My particular mag will accommodate a col of 3.357 when using the 200 grain game kings.

Interesting thread, I have not been able to get a good group out of the gun yet, although I have only shot 180g winchester factory so far...

I've loaded up some rounds 56-58 grains and am doing some shooting tomorrow and will let you guys know my findings as soon as possable but that mght not be for a couple of weeks i am starting my new job on monday and leaving for the camp on sunday
