New to ARs some help please

I was just looking in the general discussion forum and just when i thought I had enough guns to play with someone posted about there cool looking AR and now I want one! Sigh... More money :D

It was a Kel Tec SU16, I see P&D has one for $799 on their site, now I know this is low budget and everyone is going to say save up and buy a better one blah blah blah. I also tried out one at the local range someone else had that was only $600 again from P&D, I don't remember what it was but it was .223 and a lot of fun. Is there anything between $600-$800 that's close to the Kel Tec? Prefer non-restricted and .223.

Also I have to put all the toys on it and that's going to be even more cash!

Also can you get a red dot that looks like this -bushnell2x32 MP Matte Black Red/Green Dot T-Dot, Tactical- but it 4x zoom that is around $300?

Any suggestions for a grip that's under $100?

Part of the reason I'm on a budget is funds are stretched on a few other projects and from what I hear these are hungry critters and can be hard on the wallet for rounds.

Oh and yes I've looked at about 14 threads on this subject already but didn't find these answers.

The SU-16F is not an AR. It takes AR magazines, and will take AR stocks with a stock adapter. But, an AR it is not. If it was, it'd be restricted by default. With the AR stock adapter it will be around $1000.

Anything I own that takes an AR grip has a Hogue. They're usually priced around $27.99. Magpul grips aren't spectacularly expensive either.

Do you know if what you were firing was non-restricted? The KelTec is pretty much the cheapest non-restricted black .223 that I know of. A modified mini-14 maybe?
 
your options are going to be limited if you're looking for something non-restricted. I'm not sure about your other questions as I am fairly new to AR's as well but spend some time looking around wolverine's site or other vendors and see if there is anything you like (that won't be the problem) and can afford (this will).

OK new guy, cool down.

First off, an SU-16 is not an AR. This is an AR-15 (the M4 version, if it matters):

Second, all AR's and variants are restricted by name. So, if you want an AR it will not be non-restricted. What you are thinking of is a black rifle. There are some of those that are non-restricted, but none that are cheap. The SU-16 is the lowest priced of the ones available to us. There are threads on this subject (low priced non-restricted black rifles) at least weekly, sometimes daily. Search for "non-restricted" in the Black Rifles forum (don't forget to set the search window time frame to 36 months instead of a week) and you will find dozens of threads.

As for optics, there are a million choices. The cheap ones are all Chinese made and very spotty on quality. The cheapest red dot I would consider is a Vortex Sparc, they have a mostly good reputation (though not 100% by any means) and Vortex has a good reputation for warranty coverage. They run ~$220 from a number of places. They are 1x magnification and include a 2x magnifier to get up to 2x power.

Probably the best value in an optic with magnification is the Millet DMS-1. It is less than $300 in some places and offers 1-4x magnification and an illuminated reticle. Here is an AR with the Millet on it and a Burris P.E.P.R. mount.

I hope the original posters don't mind a bit of plagarism. OP, if you want to try a real AR, the Norinco CQ-A is the lowest priced one out there at ~$700 (I think, haven't looked for a while now) and is a great value for the money.

Oops my mistake! Thought it was, ok so I want a cool looking black gun that uses AR mags? I just want it to be non restricted cause restricted can be a bit of a pain.

$28 for a grip? Sweet!

I would have to be the Kel-Tec SU16 then based upon what you said about budget. I owned one. Very light rifle that is foldable (more foldable in non-AR original state). Doesn't particularly like surplus ammo but does just fine with Federal AE 55gr.

The other one you weren't sure of could have been a Mini-14 with Sparta gear (see Hical.net). However, it does not take AR mags so it would be limited to 5 rnds like other center fire semiautos.

Going up in price again the Tavor (bullpup black rifle) takes ARs. And in the same range of budget are the Robinson guns. Research ACR / XCR.
 
No, it's not a mini 14 I've seen that one a few times. I'm gueessing it was restricted.

They seem to have forgotten the middle of the road. Non-res, black rifle, takes AR mags and is a good value. The Benelli MR-1. Can be had on the EE for 13-1400 which is only slightly more than the Keltec after you add the aftermarket stock/grip, etc. and stays well below the 2K that HK or RA will run you.
