New to ARs.

Hey guys,

I am brand new to ARs, just got my Norc M4 in the mail today. I don't think that I will want to stick with the iron sights for long.
My questions are as follows-
In order to mount a quad rail, would I have to change the gas block? It seems that the gas block and front sight are the same piece on my M4.
Basically what I want to do is get rid of the front sight/gas block, put a quad rail on instead of the plastic handguard, then get a red dot or something like it with some flip up sights as backup.
How hard would it be to get rid of the front sight/gas block on my M4, and where could I find a new gas block in Canada?
Also, if anyone has any suggestions on good places to find AR parts in Canada, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

There are many ways to approach this. Do you want a free float quad rail, or a quad rail to replace the standard handguard?
You can keep your front sight post and still mount a red dot optic.
You can take a grinder and cut off the front sight post leaving the gas block (thats what I did)
You can buy a low profile gas block and replace it.
There are many different models of flip up backup sights, one of the more popular models is the Magpul Backup Sight.

As for optics, if you are on a budget, or just dont want to spend alot, I highly recommend the Vortex Strikefire.

Go to AR15.com go the tech forums and read all the faqs and how to stickies. It will give you very detailed info on everything you will need to know, how to do it and what the differences are.
 
Cool. I guess a free floating quadrail would be cool, but I am not sure how that would mount onto the AR, whereas if I just replaced the plastic handrail with a quad rail, then that would be much easier.

Can I actually replace the gas block myself, or would I have to get a gunsmith to take care of that?
 
there is a huge optics section at AR15 to, it lists and gives pictures of just about every major type of optic, from red dots, acogs, scopes whatever so you can even see what alot of the popular brands look like, recticles included.

The how to posts are very good as they list tools and stuff you will need.

You can also get a lot of good reference books from Brownells, even a few DVDs on how to build and fix ARs.
