Hi all
I'm moving from Wales to Fort st John next week and I'm looking for some advice on hunting and the law in that area. Going to start with my bow and in a few months move on to fire arms. Just want to know if I will need to attend any training coarse or apply for permits/license. Thanks in advance Craig.

Craig,

welcome and good time to move.

start by reading this will help you.

I don't know how long is it before getting a residency for hunting in BC but you ll have certainly to follow an hunting education and ethic program then for firearms the PAL that will give the permission to possess firearms and buy ammo.

good luck for all.

we moved few years ago from Europe and never regret the old continent ....

12 months before I get residency so I guess if I want to hunt before that I will have to pay for a guide and hunt as a tourist :( . Well if I don't get to hunt I'm sure the fishing will keep me busy

Welcome to Canada and British Columbia.

Moving from Wales to FSJ in the middle of December may be a bit of a shock physically. Pack plenty of wool underwear and socks and learns to love a toque!

If you are coming on work or student visa you can still apply for Firearms Licence and after that for Hunting Permit. Your Canadian Residency has nothing to do with that. Once you get permanent address in BC you can legally take Hunting Course. Word of advice you will need two references to sign your application for Firearm permit, your references could be from UK so make sure you get someone of significance like your accounted local policeman or your doctor from where you live in UK to sign your application and give you good reference. When you apply just do it for non-restricted firearms the processing time will be much shorter. In your case it will take 2-3 months since they will need to get your Criminal Record Check from UK

Ha Ha! Well, you'll definitely have a white Christmas! There's about 2 ft of snow on the ground and it's -20 out now. The Peace River area of BC (Fort St John / Dawson Creek, etc) has LOADS of hunting opportunities - more big game than you can imagine, small game & birds. And lots of Crown land to explore. The firearms (PAL) and hunting license (CORE) are entirely separate processes. You don't need one to have the other, so start the process (enroll in courses) as early as possible. You will eventually need both to own a gun and go hunting. Welcome to BC. This part of the province has beautiful spring / summer & fall weather. Just that winter can last nearly 6 months...

Just spent the last two years working in Greenland so it should only take me a few weeks to get use to the cold again. Really cant wait to get some hunting in don't mind how long it take for the fire arms to sort I just want to take something with my shiny new bow even if its just a bunny lol
