Hello

Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death on this forum, but I just bought my first cap and ball pistol (1861 Navy in .36 cal), and would appreciate some advice on the equipment I need for a range kit. I know next to nothing about running this kind of gun, other than what I can pick up on YouTube. All I have at this point is the pistol itself. I know obvious stuff like a flask, powder, balls, caps. Other than that, I'm lost.

Thanks

Best resource for newbie cap & ballers. You're on a bit of a learning curve and the guys there will tune you up PDQ.

1st on your list should be a good book on shooting and maintaining the gun safely. You will want to get a capper as it's hard to get the nipples on with just your fingers. Track Of The Wolf in the States has anything you would need and ships here. I used Pyrodex P for a propellant. Don't forget to put lube over the loaded chambers.

See if you can meet up with someone that can show you the ropes. Cowboy shooters or a black powder club are always welcoming to new shooters.

An hour at the range is worth a lot more than reading a hundred posts. Next best thing would be to find a good video and watch it several times.

1. You put powder in the chamber.
2. You place ball over chamber with powder in it and ram it home with that lever thing under the barrel.
3. You put grease over the ball thats on top of the powder in the chamber.
4. You place a cap on the nipple of the chamber that has the powder, ball and grease in it.
.
You can roll some black powder "doobies" out of zig zag rolling papers, filled with your prefered weight of powder, drop em in the chamber, mash the ball down on top of them and fire em the same way. Really cuts down on time at the firing line, but takes up time at home.
