Hey, Everyone, just wanted to say hi. New member, and new to the sport. My father has a long history of shooting competitively going back to the 60's, but has been out of the sport for a long time. Now in my late 20's, I have dragged him out to the range so he can pass on all his knowledge. Currently looking to purchase a decent target rifle. Looking at a Tikka T3, or a Savage Model 10. .308 or .223. Recommendations appreciated. Only a target shooter, not for hunting, and the longest range around here that I know of is 300 yards, so I'm not sure if I should just get a .223 because I won't be punching holes much at 800 yards. Cheers.

.223 rem, .243 win and .308's are great shoulder savers and will do 100y groupings easily.. (barrel length, obviously a factor)

but .25-06, .270 win and .30-06's will go the distance, but with a lil more kick

At this point I am strongly leaning towards a Tikka T3 Tactical in .308. Now I just have to find a good scope to buy. Fixed power, variable power, recommendations and suggestions about what to look for would be appreciated!

I would say even a 4-12 isn't enough for that gun. 4-16 range and I am a huge fan of the large body that allows more light in as well. 50 or 55mm front is also nice. I have a 4-12x55 on my mauser 308 and it is excellent but if it was a longer heavy barrel then I would be wanting for more.

What about 3200 10x40

Hello,
I've just been reading a ton lately, looking for answers about a scope for the same application. Of course budget is always what people ask, but I've found that the Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10x, 40mm is great for what I need it to do (learn to punch paper) on a budget that I can handle. Of course there are better out there, but the mildot reticle is nice and it has 1/4moa target turrets. I bought it at a local store for $225.00, with Burris Signature Zee rings with inserts. All and all, it's been a good choice for the money. That said, I'm just getting started, so please take my words with a grain of salt.

Happy shooting!

Bruce
