I just joined up and have a problem. I shoot a 300WSM and would like to reload 125gr lead but have no idea what powder to use. For my 150 & 180 I seem to have the best results with IMR 4831. Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated:
Your question is not clear. Are your shooting 125 grain lead (cast) bullets, or are you calling the normal jacketed bullets 'lead'? There is a difference in loading data between cast and jacketed ammunition.
If you are seeking load data for jacketed ammunition, why not try the Hogdon web site for loads?
If you mean 125 grain jacketed bullets, you would usually use a faster burning powder. If your manual or the internet doesn't list a load, it's probably because it's a bad idea, ie twist rate of rifling not appropriate. If you mean 125 gn cast or swaged lead, velocity normally kept very low, with quite fast burning powders. Suitable for partridge, small game loads. Get a good manual and read reference section.
With a cast lead bullet, a pistol powder like Unique is a good choice, or a fast rifle powder like 4198 or 2400.
For plinking with a 125 jacketed bullet, the fast rifle powers above are good choices. Your slow powder, like 4831 is much too slow for that light bullet.
