Hello all, I have owned and used rifles for years , but never had a restricted weapon. I recently acquired my restricted license, and I'm in the market for a new gun. I have been researching the S&W M&P 40 in a range kit. Wolverine in Red Deer is selling them for $636.00 including 4 mags Just wondering if there are any pros/cons I should know about? Or even if there is a better gun out there for a beginner like myself.

Thanks

A Smith and Wesson Range and Carry kit is a good place to start. Price is right and its good quality. .40 isnt a bad caliber to start on, but if you could get that kit in 9mm for the same price, I would go with that. 9mm ammo is more affordable.

Ruger MK II / III or Browning Buckmark for starters cheap to shoot till you get the skills..

Yes I can get it in the 9mm calibre. The price is the same for the gun. Do you know if you can buy different barrels for this frame? From what I've been reading you can buy the 40 and 45 acp barrels and the only difference is in the mags.

I'd defiantly go with 9mm if your set on a centerfire handgun. The 40s&w costs about 70% more than 9mm at local pricing.
For the price your going to pay for the conversion barrel, I would personally rather buy a different gun.

:agree: I would go for the 9mm over the .40 for my first pistol.

Hi scottde,

Try a few at your local gun shop to see which one fits you best or better yet go to a range that rents handguns and shoot some.

I bought a new Ruger SR9 a couple of weeks ago and am very happy with it. Put 200 rounds through it on Friday with no problems whatsoever.

I picked it up from P&D for $430.

Good luck in your search.

Regards

I don't see any really convincing reasons to go with the .40 over the 9mm. It's only going to punch holes in paper after all... You may as well spend the same amount on ammo but shoot far more often. I know that argument could be extended to the lowly .22, but I draw the line at the 9. The .22 is like playing penny poker. The stakes just aren't big enough to interest me.

Hi Kevinc ,

I actually did try several different calibers while I was up in Edmonton a while ago. The frame from the M&P felt great . Hence I think that's the one I'm thinking of purchasing Now I'm thinking the 9mm would be a better choice strictly because of the cost of ammo.

I've had several semi auto's and finally settled on the M&P .40 pistol..I've also ordered a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel for it...I love the feel of the M&P and the snap of the recoil..I also like the fact that I can switch barrels and have a go with the 9mm. I've owned and shot Glock 17 gen 3, CZ shadow, Ruger SR9, Ruger P345 and a few others and the M&P is my favorite...I'm reloading in the 9mm and the .40 as well so I intend to keep the cost of ammo down as much as possible. I've finally cut down the number of handguns I own to just 3 well 4 if you include the 9mm barrel...Just picked up a nice Ruger Redhawk SS with a 5.5 inch barrel..Pretty and well built, just the way I like em lol.
