i'm looking to get into turkey hunting and would like to know what is good quality shot gun that won't break the bank. i've been looking at the mossbergs as well as the rem 870's

First of all welcome. :)Any of the three guns mentioned will easily take care of a turkey with the proper shells and some patterning of your shotgun. Head to a gun shop and shoulder all three so see what fits you best and take it from there

Hi. The Mossberg(Mavericks are made by them too. Same thing as a Model 500) will cost you a bit less for the same quality as an 870. You will need a turkey choke(really just an extra full), so it'll be best to buy a shotgun that has changeable chokes. You may want to look into a Mossberg combo. Gives you a deer barrel and a bird barrel. I think there's a combo with changeable chokes on the bird barrel.
 
no its good to have extra shots..turkey,s are tough birds.so you may need a finishing shot.but i try to do it with one shot..head shot at about 10 yards..thats how far i sit from my decoy

10 yards?!?!?! thats pretty darn close, my shots have been patterned at 45 yards, and hit like a stone at 45, no problems dropping a bird out that far.

as for the shotgun, just get whatever fits you, along with an extra full choke and pattern it after you buy it with different ammo. Ive tryed many and found what works best, and im still on my first box of 10, cause its only been one shot a year from the turkey load. Ive got a mossburg 500, 3 barrel set $500 + tax

I have the mossy 3 barrel combo as well what type of ammo are you using for turkeys? I've been told federal #6 and hornady turkey shot Both pattern well with our guns. Your thoughts?
 
I have the mossberg 3 barrel combo as well. Great value, rifled slug barrel, 28" bird barrel and 24" barrel and Their patented "turkey choke". I like the safety on it as we'll better than the button safety on an 870.
 
I have 3 mossbergs and even a custom .650 choke for them. Any shot gun will work. Just practice and pattern the loads in the gun that you plan to use and stay within your limits. I've taken toms with compound bow. Crossbow. 20 ga 12 ga and 10 ga. Everything from 18.5" cylinder barrel to 32" tightly choked barrels. Choke and certain loads allow you to shoot further but why beat yourself up and risk flinching. My standard turkey load in 12 ga is 7/8 oz #6 lead at 1350 fps . Never needed a second shot so far. Lead Loader who posted above can attest to how lethal it was at 40 yards. Late season birds can be tricky and shy. But if u work at it and hunt well you will tag a bird eventually and often times at less then 30 yards

no i said i like to set my decoy out 10 yards..but i do like to get them in close for the head shot.i have the privalage of hunting a very nice area it a natural bottle neck with swamp and trees on bothe sides of a tactor path,they love the crap to roost in,so the birds come staight on to me..its private no other hunters ,so i can set a single jake decoy and gobble not cherp.thats why my decoy is close.the tom wants to kill my jake..ive gotten some nice birds through the years(without those ugly heads).ive shot them out at over 40 yards before but i think ,thats jumping the gun..i can honestly call them to right to me.. you my friend are shooting at the mass of the bird at that distance..so if you dont mind picking shot out of the meat..all the power to you

Single shot H&R 10 gauge with an X-full choke screwed into a 24in barrel.....shoot 3.5in #5s.
Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag with an X-full ported choke.....shoot 3in #4s.

Took many birds with both shotguns with great results. I use the big 10 if I know I will be set up in a location that would likely require a longer shot although a 3.5in 12 gauge load would produce much the same result. Never had the requirement for an immediate follow up shot with the break-open.....10 guage puts them down for good.....it is only a 20lb bird afterall!!
