Just bought a new SW M&P 40sw and im new to reloading pistol and have a few questions.

Do you tumble brass and then resize?

Do you trim?

How much of a crimp is suggested?

Was suggested to use winchester 231. What would be a good load for 180gr TMJ?

Just remember straight wall pistol cases headspace of the mouth of the case, make sure you can still feel that distinction between the bullet and the case and you should be fine for crimp. You only need enough crimp to hold the bullet in place and need not push into the lead.

my 2 cents

Loads used in my 40S&W M&P and Sig P226R

Cam-pro 165Gr TMJ 3.7gr CLAYS @ 1.130 COAL (Feels like shooting a light 9mm in the Sig and shoots into a 1" single hole @ 25!)

Cam-pro 165Gr TMJ 5.2gr Universal @ 1.130 COAL (Nice target load, cases from the M&P land beside me!)

Remington Bulk 155gr JHP 6.3gr Universal @ 1.150 COAL (Nice and Snappy! Feels like factory!)

Just keep the loads onder 1.135" COAL or you'll have no luck feeding in the mags...

Happy shoot'n

PS - The Clays and Universal loads burn so clean I just have to do a quick wipe and wet patch up the barrel and the guns are clean

I'Ve been fooling around with a 180 tc lead and 3.8 to 3.9 of 231 as a minor load for ODPL and find it cycles my M&P just fine and has 130 plus power factor. Oh yea loaded about 1.125 coal. Will be testing accuracy and point of impact more this week - stay tuned.

Congrats on getting into reloading.

-You'll definately want to tumble before resizing. Dirt and debris can scratch and clog up your dies.

-You'll want to check your case length once and a while and trim them once they've reached max case length. In a cartridge like the 40 S&W it will take quite a few firings to do so. I've fired some of my 40 brass 4-5 times and I still haven't had the need to trim them. I'm not loading mine right to the max so if your loads are hot they may need trimming sooner.

-Follow your dies instructions for crimping. You'll want to take the bell out from the case expander and then a little more. You should be able to feel a slight inward curve on the case mouth but not so much that the edges are rounded.

For my M&P 40 I've been using 180gr. plated bullets and 5.0grs of bullseye. It's not the first powder I'd recomend but I also use it for my 45acp in my bullseye loads for our clubs competitions and I hate having a bunch of different powders around.

I've found it to be quite accurate in my M&P but I've been told the powder is too slow for it and velocities are to low to make it suitable for IPSC.

I was also using titegroup but found it not as accurate and dirtier than bullseye.

Hodgdon website has a fair amout of load data, check it out.:)

Ya been there done that.

Let me know how it goes. It was suggested to me to start at 4.7 and work up to 5.0 of win 231. Sound right?

Actualy ive been reloading for a while now but just got into pistol.

Thanks for the info guys. I went back and checked the 10 rounds i did and all look and measure exactly the same as a factory (forgot i had them). The only change i made was OAL which was a bit long.

The load with 231 is an idpa minimum just a pop gun load. i was trying to go as light as possible and keep the gun functioning. My full power load (hot) is a 180 tc bullet over 6.2 grains of power pistol ( this one got some recoil!!)

Bullet Type or Weight

When going through the various books/charts for .40 S&W loads, do I need to match only the bullet weight to the powder or do I need to match type (eg. fmj, fn, hp..etc) & weight to the powder.

you need to match type and bullet weight to powder charge. if your bullet is not listed then pick one that is close and start with the minimum load for that type of bullet. work your load up from there. ie if you are using a MG bullet but only a sierra is listed start with it.

Hyjack or Recycle ??

Hey Nasty. Sorry if I offended thee.

I had a related question about .40 S&W reloading and thought it better to breath some life into a dormant thread.

Good information is valuable, regardless of the source.

Sorry again & happy reloading.
