New to long range--have questions

Maybe on a paper target but what is the energy at that distance for a 22 caliber bullet.

The 223 is cheap and has plenty of effective range for practice.
I understand this is a practice rifle....Not a killing rifle?

The 308 is not my first choice for killing either....But we wont go there and distract this post! :D

MORE then you imagine.

Run the numbers of a 75 (2950fps) and 80gr (2850fps) VLD from AMAX and Berger. At 800yds, these bullets are no where near subsonic.

Even if all it arrived at was 1200fps, it would be double the KE of a 22LR which is plenty to off a PD.

Given the dust the Amax were kicking up at a mile, if you could hit a PD, it would most definitely be lethal. No blow apart dramatics but a big enough hole to put it down.

There was an excellent animation on the 6BR website created by one of the ballisticians at berger that described the phenomenon of "going to sleep". It is more like a lightbulb filament with a tight pattern of circular oscillation imposed on a larger pattern of the same type that diminishes with time.

Berger 105VLD's have often produced groups of identical size at 3 and 400M for me.
