New To Long Range

Does anyone have any info on the Ontario Rifle assocation ? max shooting ive done is 100 yard but wanna go larger just not sure where i can shoot.. In Southern ontario lol bulding a .270win for long range 500-1000 yards is the eventual goals! !

Yes our Precision Rifle matches are .223 and .308. Great place to sort out your fundamentals and practice your wind reading against some first rate shooters.

My general observations is(I am not suggesting that this is your case) but folks seems completely focused on kit and shooting off tripods and the like, yet the fundamentals seem to elude them.

We are not shooting PRS style matches at Bull Meadow but rather practicing for out of province matches. I have a second rifle for this, my brother shoot PRS tactical so .308.

I don't have any equipment for PRS I currently shoot F Class but I was always interested in PRS style shooting. Do you know if there are PRS style matches being organized in Gagetown for 2018?

Not that I am aware of. The closest might be CFB Valcartier, their Rod and Gun Club is very active. Not even sure if Gagetown has a club.
The other option is off course Meaford

If you are in the Barrie area, you are in luck. The ORA shoots long range at Borden (up to 1000 yards) , just a half hour away from you.

We shoot most weekends and hopefully each Wednesday afternoon next year.

And I will be running 4 or 5 Sporting rifle shoots there, too. 100 200 and 300 yards, Deliberate, Snap and Movers.

Just noticed this thread. There have been club level prs matches at the Springfield range outside of Fredericton, and I’m trying to organize a match or 2 to be held at gagetown this season. It’s all still in the planning stages, but I’m optimistic it’ll go ahead.

Sounds great. Keep us informed. Would definitely come fro NS.

Lots of helpful extremely knowledgable people posting here. You could do much worse than getting one of them to point you to a 6.5CM factory rifle and a sound scope. Then apply your Visa and hit as many matches as you can with your new gear. When they drop hints, just do what they say. It will save you thousands and build your skills. Once you gain some experience you will realize how lucky you got. I have benefited greatly from the experience of many, long before I was knowledgeable enough to know how lost I was.

I am from Nova Scotia and looking to get into long range shooting. Wondering if anyone has any tips on getting into long range shooting, caliber preference, where to shoot. Anything really just looking to get into it.

Hope u have deep pockets......have fun!

Where can I find more info on the PRS matches at Springfield?

Please keep us posted on the matches at Gagetown if that happens! What month were you thinking?

Sorry, missed this post.

I need to submit range dates for the matches at Springfield, it will likely be posted in the club calendar after that. You can also pm me your email address and I’ll add you to the email list if you’d like.

I’m going to try for a spring match and a fall match at gagetown, if I get it approved I’ll make a thread about it here.

If you want to get into long range 1000 meters and beyond you must reload and learn how to reload with precision. Factory ammunition for the most part just will not cut it, unless you get very lucky and your rifle happens to like that particular load. It will require much research on your part. The learning curve is steep and reloading is just one of the many factors U will have to master. You will also need a set of precision reloading dies for the caliber you are shooting, they go for over 300 bucks. You will also need to invest in a good chronograph to understand how your bullets are performing down range. Extreme spread becomes so very important at longer ranges. I would suggest a Labradar which is not cheap but will give you the kind of accurate readings necessary for long range load development. Then there is the equipment, a good precise accurate rifle of the proper caliber (338 Lapua in a McMillan stock with a hand lapped precision custom barrel ante cheap) Good glass starting at about 2 grand and a Kystrel ballistic computer or some such other computing device to give you a firing solution. Long range shooting is not cheap, and its challenging which makes it fun. I would start off with some good books on the subject and there are many, before you spend a dime on anything. One such author of note who has written many books on the subject of long range shooting and ballistics is, Brian Lintz. He can get U started. There was one poster on here that suggested iron sights. Anyone who can do long range shooting with irons has great skill. One of the most successful snipers of all time was a Finland soldier by the name of Semo Hiya with over 700 kills with a Finn made Mosin Nigant using irons. Then there was the second battle of Adobe Walls, where Billy Dixon shot a Comanche war chief off a horse at 7/10 of a mile with a 50/90 sharps around 1875 or so, the date escapes me but you can google it. Good luck, be safe, and have fun.
