Picked up an original marlin gbl (pre remlington) that does not look like it was shot much. I put the rail, Blackhawk 6 screw rings, and leupold ultralight 2.5x scope on it. It seemed a bit heavy so I drilled some holes in the butt stock and routered a bit out of the forearm. The rifle is exactly 8lbs as you see it. It shoots fine with the weight off it, the 325 leverevolutions are not too bad. The only issues I have are; the scope rings do not seem that heavy duty, hopefully they hold up (the clamp thread bolt is 8-32 does not seem that robust); and the trigger seems to have about 3/16" movement (play) where it can be pushed forward. On the trigger, has anyone had similar issues? It seems to function fine and breaks around 5lbs.

Nice rig you got yourself there. I have similiar setup cosisting of an 1895 topped with a bushnell 4200 1.25-4x28, works great in the bush. The trigger play you're talking about is known as the infamous marlin trigger flop and is common with all Marlin levers.
I know there is a kit available from Wild West Guns but I'm not sure how hard it would be to import in from the US, maybe someone with some more knowledge will chime in.

Also have a Marlin .444P that i also adore.
Your gun must have had the Laminant changed out with a SBL?
I set a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 on my two guns. I also think a VXII 1-4x20 would look & work great.

I really liked the 1.25-4 variable, but this 2.5x ultralight is only 8 ounces and 8 inches long, I figured the lighter weight was easily worth 1.5x less magnification. Light and sturdy, less stress on the mounts and rings than slamming a heavy scope around. As I mentioned, I am right on at 8lbs now. I think I could shave a little more weight removing the rail and using talleys, but the scope has great eye relief and I have it more forward than I could get with the talleys I think. I tried some warne maxima rings on it first and they were a few ounces heavier, but lower.

The GBL looks good. I didn't know until I read this thread that Marlin is now part of Remington.

Where can you find the manufacture date to see if the Marlin is pre-Remington?

As far as mfr dates marlin 1895s with Serial number 91### or lower are general pre remington marlins (100-91=2009). The pre marlin guns are also marked New Haven CT, and after remington closed that plant, new guns are made in NC somewhere. There is also a proof stamp JM very small on the left side of the barrel near the receiver, although I have read about newer guns using old barrels with the old stamp.
