Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of CGN.com.

Excuse the formalities but this post marks a special occasion for me; the acquisition of a Lee Enfield rifle:rockOn: This is a rifle that I've been oogling over for some time, so I am very excited to have one in my possession. A bit of backstory but I promise there will be photos!

As a student I had to make the pledge to put the kibosh on picking up new firearms (a pledge that I held to EVEN in the face of a Thompson Contender (dream pistol) with .223 & 30-30 barrels for $700 at a local gunsmith's). The only allowance I gave myself was that I wouldn't resist a good deal on a Lee Enfield if the opportunity presented itself.

After missing out on a few incredible sporter deals on the Milsurp EE I all but gave up and posted a WTB to see what might pop up. Within a few days I got an email from several people, one of whom was dr1953, who said that he had a decent sporter that he would let go for cheap. My friend and I went over to take a look at it and upon entering Dan's office were gobsmacked by his collection of Lee Enfields. Naturally, we spent the next 25 minutes talking about them before we even saw the sporter he was selling, and when I finally got to handle it he offered it to me at an even better price. I was ecstatic and agreed to the sale, but had to return another day because I left my money in the bank :HR: That night Dan emailed me photos of the sporter, but he had dressed it up in full furniture and put all the bits and pieces on (he offered the wood and pieces to me at a discount for when I could afford to come back and buy them) and offered the whole rifle in it's current state for a price I couldn't refuse. I picked it up the next day, and he even showed me how to take the furniture apart properly to avoid damage and follow reassembly conventions (bolt heads on the left side!).

I'd like to take this moment to thank Dan for the incredible kindness he showed me and my friend. It is great people like him--and the fine folks here as well--that make this sport/hobby/interest so welcoming and enjoyable by offering their knowledge and friendship without hesitation. This community and it's members never cease to amaze me.

And now, without further ado...

It isn't perfect but it's bloody brilliant to me. The action is smooth and solid, and everything about it is a treat! I especially enjoyed learning about the intriguing "magazine cutoff" and tried it out when I went shooting. Speaking of which...

I had an issue with several FTFs (firing Remington .303 Brit) where the firing pin didn't strike the primer enough on some shots. Several failures in a row would be followed by a successful shot, sometimes on the round which had previously failed to fire. Below is a photograph of several rounds; not the depth of the strike on the primer. The one on the left failed to fire, the one in the middle fired successfully on it's first cycle, and the one on the right fired after a few re-cycles (note the 2 different sized dents on the primer).

Has anyone encountered this/any ideas of what it may be/anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks for your input with the firing issue, and I hope that you enjoyed reading about/seeing my newest and favourite firearm!

Beautiful rifle. FTF, weak striker spring, fouled spring (dirt and or rust), broken spring, insufficient firing pin protrusion. Check protrusion then take the bolt apart.

Check protrusion, if good then soak the bolt in some solvent, blow out, then oil it up, taking a LE bolt apart to clean is unnecessary, you should only take it apart to replace or repair parts.

Thanks for the info guys, I had a feeling that it might have something to do with the protrusion of the firing pin. The spring feels to be a bit on the weak side so I'll probably replace it. Cleaned out a lot of gunk with some electrical systems solvent so I think a full bolt tear down would be a wise idea! Perhaps I'll get it re-blued at the same time.

When I can get back to the range I'll take some photos and videos, but today the Rifle/Pistol range is closed to I'm limited to small caliber arms in another facility :(

I wouldn't recommend tampering with the finish. The (presumably original) finish appears to be good and a re-blue job will definitely reduce the value to a collector.
