New to me Mosin

Congrats! Now get the shoulder pad and stock pad too!! :)))
I took mine out yesterday and after about 150 rounds my shoulder is soo sore...
So what s the next? The answer is: an SVT-40!!

OP, nice looking rifle; is that a hint of Tiger stripe pattern in the wood? I like the M/N platform looks; I've heard it slagged upon, but I find it somewhat graceful.
In my advancing years though, I must be becoming trollish.
But I've never seen the M/N 30/91 as a big recoil gun; neither do my daughters, lol.
Although in all fairness to you they mostly shoot the M39; the recoil pad is for them. I shoot the M44 bareback; mano-e-carbino.
Got it so hot this day the cosmo started to ooze out of the forestock, that spam can was opened at the start of the session. That's about 140 rds give or take a couple, my daughter maybe shot 30-40 rd through the M39. I accounted for the rest through the carbine.
A couple of freckles on the front of my shoulder the next morning but definitely no bruise.

And the bayonet does make it shoot better, I was curious about this. The M44 shoots about 2 ft right of POA at 300 paces with the bayo folded.
But if you shoot from a bench you will get bruised; I did all my shooting this day either standing or seated marine style with a tight sling wrap and tight into the shoulder hold.
You are not going under a sweater for a small squeeze here, no delicate hold required... grab onto that rifle and hold on tight! That's what I've found works good for me anyhow

No bruise but just very tender and sore. I'm not a meaty guy and this thing hit my collar bone twice.... That was painful. Yeah you right, you need to hold it really tight against your shoulder, it was my fault.

I find the recoil easy to handle, so long as I'm standing on two feet like a man, instead of crawling around like a beast (sorry, old gun joke).

I don't find much particular difference in recoil between the M44, 91/30, and SVT... Well, maybe the SVT is a bit of a "Hard Push" instead of a "Solid Smack" - but the difference isn't huge.

Prone or bench shooting, where your body doesn't have a chance to roll with the recoil, can get a bit rough fairly quickly though. Standing, I can go through a couple hundred rounds in a day, and I'll definitely be aware of the fact the next day, but no bruising. Mind, that's after doing it a few times and getting used to how to roll with the recoil. The first time I chugged through 200 rounds in an afternoon with the SVT (it was just way too much fun at the time to realize how much ammo I was burning through), I had a fairly sizable red mark on my shoulder the next day.

The more you do it, the less it bothers you. So stock up on cheap crates while you can and keep burning through the ammo :)
