New to precision rifle - Help sort me out

I am putting together my first semi-precision rifle, and have some really basic questions. below is the build list to give some clarity:

Medium Range / Entry Rifle setup @ 100m-850m

Rem 700 5R gen 2 in 6.5 Creedmoor
Leupold Vx3i LRP 8.5-25x50mm FFP
20 MOA Rail
Rings not yet purchased
Triggertech trigger


- If I put a 20MOA base and put medium/low rings on it will I see barrel shadow in the scope, or do you have to use high rings to compensate for this?

- how do you install the adjust the cheek adjustable cheek riser, does one simply drill holes threw the buttstock? How do you keep the holes straight and not off angled?

- do all the drop mag upgrades for Rem 700's cost an arm and a leg? Are there any decent options for less than $300?

Do you have the stock? if not? selecting the adj cheek piece would be a common option when you purchase?
Detachable bottom metal (DBM) will be determined by the stock, and what inlet it has?
I use low rings, on a 20 MOA rail shouldn't be an issue. A 50mm objective on a scope is pretty common, so I think you will be fine.

When it comes to DBM you're talking about what mags you want to use? or go with a an "internal" mag?
AICS are about the most common, I use Accurate and they are excellent.

I like Badger rings (steel) TPS are "good bang for the buck", and you can't go wrong with the standard Triggertech trigger.

There will be no issues with "shadowing". Mount the scope at a height that's comfortable for you when you get behind the scope. Generally that doesn't mean as low as possible.

In order to put in adjustable cheek rest and DBM, you are going to be spending decent money. Personally I think you would be better off investing that money into a stock or chassis that already has those features. From a value for performance perspective, it's hard to beat the KRG Bravo. MDT XRS would be another comparable option.

If you are not set on the Remington, I would look at Tikka. The manufacturing quality and QA/QC is better with Tikka, Remington has been pushing out products of questionable quality these days. I think you will find the Tikka action more favorable as well to the Remington. It's the best value for performance rifle in the precision rifle game right now, IMO. Combine that with a KRG Bravo, and you have a powerhouse of a setup for a reasonable budget. Tikka's are more expensive then Remington's, but I wouldn't be afraid to look on the secondary market.
 
Personally I wouldn't build a precision rifle again on a REM action, trued or not, and I've built a couple, so it's not that I think they are bad. Today you can get actions from Defiance like the Ruckus that are modestly priced and top notch, no "semi" precision there, if you get the right barrel and bullets. I'm a "buy once cry once" kinda guy. YMMV.
 
If you have the funds, look at ditching your current stock for a krg bravo or the MDT xrs if you like the look(I don't). The krg is a direct drop in replacement that allows for aics mags and adjustable length of pull and cheek weld. The add ons are endless. I loved my Remington 700 more when I ran it in the bravo.
 
I know the MDT chassis are pretty popular due to there price and modularity, however the one I had a look at wouldn't accept a "over sized" lug? so maybe they are just made for a strait R&R?

All the MDT chassis I have will rake an oversize lug, what chassis was it?

To the OP, If you don't already have the rifle and stock, you can just get that barrelled action and drop it in a chassis, easiest way to go to adjustable cheek rest and LOP and DBM. If you already have the stock, you can just add a stock pack (like the Triad Tactical one) that allows you to build up the cheek height and then get a Stiller DBM that you can easily fit to your stock with very minimal work.
 
You should be good with low rings and you shouldn’t have any issues.
Cheek risers you can get a few different ones if you are looking at getting a Kydex saddle style, then yes you just drill through the stock. Most come with a little adapter to help keep it straight but I prefer to use a drill press if you have one.
For a saddle type cheek riser you will want to make sure you don’t have a plastic stock as many of them are semi hollow in the butt and I am not sure how well they hold up with out bracing somehow
Bottom metal is fairly costly and will usually run you $250+

Not sure what stock you currently have but you can pick up a KRG Bravo for about $550, it will give you a full aluminum chassis to mount to, your mag well and adjustable cheek riser. You can accessorize it to your hearts content. Tom at Go Big Tactical has a lot to offer for these. You would still need to buy a mag

Not sure if you have bought a rifle already but here are a few items to consider if you haven’t
Rem 700 has a lot of parts options that are easily available and can be transferred to a custom action if you later on buy. I do find my Remington don’t have the best barrels. I can reload and tune them to be ok but it is some work I would recommend changing out the barrel of you can down the line. But this will cost $$500 for the barrel and roughly $350-$450 to chamber and install

Tikka has a great action and is super smooth. Typically pretty accurate right out of the box and not a need to change the barrel right away. Tikka also has a good following of parts but may not be as readily available and typically not transferable to a custom action if you ever go that route
Tikka is likely your best bet out of the gate

Custom action. Your cheapest bet would be likely the Defiance Tenacity that would be about $1200 plus Trigger $350 plus barrel and chamber $900 if you go this route you will want a better stock then the KRG Bravo and the stock or chassis would likely run you $1400 - $2300

Each choice has its pros and cons and varying costs. If you really get into shooting you will end up at a full custom gun eventually I am sure. If you just want to buy factory and shoot it and plink around I would choose the Tikka. If you want to shoot but buy cheaper now and build up as you go then the Remington would be a good choice

All of the options I have stated come up in the EE at a discounted rate

That’s really odd. They usually have a very large inlet so you can use an oversized lug. Do you know what model you looked at?
