Good evening all! So I'm somewhat new to precision and long range shooting (I started learning about it just before I joined CGN then got distracted with other stuff...mainly milsurps, shotguns, black rifles and pistols :p). I recently bought a Remington SPS DM in .308 and was going to toss it in a chassis and start tinkering with a budget long range build, but now I need to condense the collection a little bit and will have to have a multi-purpose rig that can also help me out with hunting.

So, that means I have to choose between my flamer Weatherby S2 in .270, sticking it in an MDT chassis for the Howa actions and doing a mag conversion (I think?) vs. doing the same for the Remington 700 SPS DM.

What do you guys think? Is .270 too light a round to really reach out and hit those long distances (300-500m in the short term, 1k in the next few years), or should I just abandon both and get something better suited to both hunting and long range? I have seen a fair amount of negative feedback for the MDT gear, so would that be the right way to go for a budget long range kit, or should I save my pennies for a Cadex (assuming I ditch the Vanguard...).

Thanks for your help!

For hunting, I like 308, 30-06, and 300wm. For target shooting, 308, and 338lm. I'm a tad one sided to 308 because it can hunt all the big game in canada, and all normal game, and if ur good enough with aim, perhaps small game if it's permitted in ur area.

The 700 is solid, with a huge after market, and platform potential. You could do almost any stile with the thing too, nice 22" pipe with a good barrel on it can do 800m with time. Any flavor stock you want, and not much of a pain to home clock with any modifications you want.

MDT would be fine, cadex isn't cheap, and definitely not light unless you get there basic light strike package, so it might be a tad heavy to drag around. Have a look at hs precision, rather light, also bell & carelson.

So if my 2 cents count for anything, I vote R700.

Pick the one you like the best and use it for everything, both will reach a mile pretty easily, can't go wrong with the 700 as there is a lot of kit based off the 700 and is usually very availible.

I have to agree with everyone on keeping the Remington. I loved my Vanguard for hunting, nothing wrong with that rifle at all. 308 is just the more versatile cartridge here. You can find components for loading both match and hunting rounds or buy factory match ammo just as easy if you need to.

For the stock, NOM4D wrote what I was thinking. HS or B&C make some nice, light stocks. The next step up would be either Manners EH1 or MacMillan Game Scout. Both can be had for right around $1000

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys. I was thinking the Remington is the better candidate as well...the Howa action is just so smooth, it'll be hard to let her go!
