New to reloading - Full Length Sizing Question

Hi There

I just started reloading and I am loading 45/70. I have tumbled my brass and now I would like to decap and Full Length size. Setup the press with Full Length Size die (Followed instructions) Cam all the way up (shell holder in place) Screw die down until it touched shell holder. Screw in Die an extra 1/8 th turn and tight up die. Ready to go.......Lube my cases, place cases in shell holder Ram up all the way (decap worked great prime out) but it left small crimp/dents like marks on the around the outside of the case. Can someone help....

Dies and press?

When setting up a full length die in a press, the procedure is different than with a neck die. The position of the shellholder when the press ram is fully raised in relationship to the bottom of the full length die is critical to determining the amount of full length sizing that occurs. This position determines how much of the body of the case is sized but, more importantly, it affects how much the case shoulder is set back, which changes the cartridge headspace. The amount of cartridge headspace has an impact on accuracy, ease or difficulty in feeding the case whether from a magazine or loading ramp, and on extending the life of the case.

maybe because of the lube. you not need lube on a 45/70 case if your using carbide dies. if the dies are new, make sure you clean them well. they may have some anti corrosion coating on them.

Sounds like you die is set up properly, but you have too much lube on the case.

Ok, re-setup die just touching shell holder - Less lube.....Problem solved!!! Brass look right.....Thanks for your help as always!!!!!!
