Good afternoon fellow nutterz!

I don't frequent this particular section of the forums very much so please forgive my ignorance.

A Mosin Nagant fell into my lap this morning (early birthday gift), and would like to know more about it. It looks to be a 91/30, complete with bayonet. I quickly searched the forums but didn't find what I was looking for.

So, long story short, where can I find some data or info on how to identify these neat old rusky smoke poles?

I'll add some pics shortly.

It appears to be a Izhevsk (Soviet) but the extra stamps are what I am curious about. Captured? something added for Canadian sale?

This is a great place to start!

X2 If you enjoy or are interested in anything Mosin, this is your site. Its a very well organized, complete, and carefully put together with any or all markings, rifles, accessories, ect.

Its my go-to page when I'm missing something or need better info

Maybe I'll change the stock, cut down the barrel, put some aftermarket sights on it, modify the bolt handle, add some sort of scope mount and a bipod. Hmmm

:stirthepot2:

Nice Mosin! Yours has the hammer and sickle stamp, I have not seen that on the 91-30 just on the M44. Not that I know much.

I have given up on feeling wrathful about those who want to bubba, let'er rip!

I was being a smart ass, no way I am butchering this. Lol

Izhevsk arsenal and refurbished at some point past 1940...how's the bore ?

The bore looks as crisp, mint and shiny as any of my new or custom rifles. Amazing actually.

refurbishment marking

Using this... http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/misc_marks/index.html

So far the hammer and sickle crest is the Soviet Union Crest

The triangle with an arrow is the Izhevsk marking (later)

The empty box below the Soviet crest I assume means 7th GRAU Arsenal refurbished, correct?

Does that mean it was refurbished by the soviets? Is there a way to tell when, or where, or track its history?

I don't own a firearm where I don't know it's complete history. Except for one, and even the BRNO or CZ gurus can't figure that one out.

As for why it has the hammer and sickle, from what I have dig up so far it's normal on this rifle being Soviet Izhevsk built in 1940.

The only thing I am missing is the where and when it was refurbished. Not really understanding the 7th GRAU Arsenal stuff.

PS: I happen to know where there are quite a few more of these, lol.

Wow! You are serious about learning more about your Mosin. Have you found out why your Mosin has the hammer and sickle when most don't?

From what I have seen all Soviet Izhevsk manufactured Mosin Nagants have the hammer and sickle. Both the pre-1928 with the nice writing on the receiver, and the post 1928 which has the more common triangle with arrow in it.

By any chance your 'most' don't all happen to be Tula? If they are, that would explain why they don't have it.

Yep! Mine is a Tula and I would guess that Tulas are all that I have seen up close. Now I need an Izhevsk, preferably pre-1928. Thanks, I think:confused:

7th Arsenal(an empty square stamp)used to be in Riga, former Latvian SSR. That's where in 1960's majority of SVT's were refurbished, along with Mosins etc.
