I recently bought a Savage 12FLV in .223 (1:9 twist) and have been trying to find an accurate load, but can't seem to get better and 1 1/2" at 100 yards. I have heard that it could be the bullet seating, or even possibly my stock. Any help would be appreciated.:bangHead:

A) Take the action out of the stock and make sure it is clean and dry.
B) Put it back together and tighten the bedding screws.
C) Check scope bases, rings.

What load and what bullet are you using? What type of scope do you have and what kind of rest are you shooting off?

I have tried Varget, IMR 4895, RL19, and Benchmark, and then 50, 55, 60, 70, 75gr bullets. Basically I have been trying just about anything I can find in our 3 reloading books...but I just can't seem to get the load and bullet grain right. I have a bushnell legend scope, and we have been using the leadsled when shooting them.

How much time do you leave between rounds? I know that 1.5" at 100 yds is pretty good if you don't let the barrel cool between shots. As the barrel heats, it bends. Try putting a heat sink on it or just let it cool between shots and see if it improves.

Do want maynard said put about 45" pounds on front screw and 30 to 35 on rear.
also rin a thin piece of paper between stock and barrel and see if barrel is free from touching.
Loads 69gr sierras will work the best for all round target shooting best powders
Varget, RL 19 & VT 540 start around 23.5 gr and go up check your loading books for max
for longer shooting I find 75gr berger VLD are best in 1/9 wist
good luck post your targets

Okay I will try those suggestions, but I also have another question? It's a heavy barrel and I was told to maybe think about stiffening the stock? what to you think about it? and how would be the best way to do so, I am a lefty and am having a hard time finding an aftermarket stock.

Try some IMR 4198 and some 55 gr Rem bulk bullets. Mine likes 21.5 gr of this stuff and I have shot many groups from 1/2 to 1 in and in between depending on conditions !!!

I have a savage 12btcss 223 and when I first got it I had the same problem as you .. I put a piece of plastic from a shotgun shell behind the recoil lug to tighten everything up between the stock and the action. It seemed to work. It's cheap and worth a try. I now get an average 5 shot group of about .75 at 100. I've found using 27 gr varget and 40 gr hornady v-max or 23.5 gr reloader 10x and the same bullets seem pretty good. I have been using cci 450 primers. as far as velocity I have no idea if these are fast loads but I know they are faster than coyotes..

Paulsona,

One almost universal load in a .223 is 26g of Varget with a 69grn Sierra seated just off the lands lit up by CCI BR4 or 450 primers.

This load should shoot under an inch at 100 in almost any rifle.

Give me a PM. If you need a hand I am also in Kamloops. (I live about 2 minutes from the KTSA range gates).

If it's a new rifle it might need about 100 rounds down the pipe until it starts to come together.

Well - Not to offend you, but if you're relatively new to shooting, the group size may be limited by your shooting ability. Have you let someone else try the rifle?
