New to shooting sports, I don't know what to start with...

I live in BC, so I would prefer starting there.

I've heard of IPSC, IDPA, tact pistol, and 3 gun as well, I was wondering what BC has to offer.

I heard that IPSC is more formalized as it is a international confederation.


I've been shooting at the range a little bit and currently own a S&W M&P 9 with a DCAEK trigger, and a CZ SP01 Shadow Line with a 15lb Wolffe main spring.

I want to try using both to see which one suits me best.

Do I need to take the Black Badge for all the different types of competition since I'm only allowed to holster my gun after I've completed the course? I only know of the Black Badge course for IPSC, are there any other courses for certification for the other shooting leagues mentioned?

There is also steel challenge. This would be a good way to get into action shooting as it places you in an environment with stresses of competition with minimal movement.

It will also teach you close to everything you would need for other disciplines(draw, sight acquisition, transitions,etc).

Coincidentally there is steel challenge practice nights, open to everyone, at AFGC every tues @ 6:00-10:00pm.

Is that Alberni Fish & Game Club? I don't know the acronyms for the clubs lol
 
For IPSC you need the Black Badge course. Your CZ would be appropriate for that as it is one of the more popular Production guns. There are lots of YouTubes showing how IPSC works. If you want to see it in person, come out next month to Poco which is holding a qualifier match June 16th.

Do I have to pay to be a spectator? If I'm spending the day there can I use the range there too?

I doubt you would have to pay to be a spectator,..more than likely they would appreciate you coming out if you are interested.
Most likely, they have reserved the range for the match, but that does not mean that you can not shoot after the match.(?)
 
The lower ranges will be reserved for the match. But if you wanted to shoot afterwards, you could pay the day card fee($20 I think) and shoot on range 7.
