Hey all,

I've actually never shot a shotgun before. Logically, this lead me to the purchase of a brand new Mossberg 500. Just cleaned her and I'm ready to take her out with me.

1. Barrels that have ribbing on the bore (for screw in chokes), when you take the choke out to fire slugs, does this ribbing affect the shot/slug's trajectory or velocity or anything for that matter?

2. I really want to shoot trap or skeet. Can I do it with a 28" pump? How do I even start this sport? Just show up and say I'm new? I know very little about it but it looks very fun! (Located in the lower mainland in BC)

Happy shooting!
Cheers

Ok, ... never fire that barrel without a choke screwed in ... or you will damage the threads.

Screw in a Cylinder or an Improved Cylinder choke ... and shoot as many slugs as you want .... and have fun!!

Great that's exactly what I thought........... thank you!

Step One, read the owners manual for said firearm.
Step twp if no owners manual go to you tube and tpye in make and model of said firearm in ones hands.
Step three, type in shiotgun type activity in you tube and watch lots and lots and lots of shotgun type shooting sports.
Step three seek out a gun club where they shoot the type of shooting sport that interest you.
Did I mention that there are loads of shooting related sports on you tube ?
Have fun and take your ppe with you to the club cause they generally do not have gear for sale or rent/loan .

You can safely shoot modern foster slugs through a full choke, accuracy may not be the best but it’s safe to do so. I generally find Modified to be the best for slugs but I have one barrel that shoots slugs poa/poi with a full choke.

The rib is on top of the barrel, threads hold the chokes in, and you never fire the gun without a choke tube in place. Trap and skeet are two very different games, you need to find what trap or skeet fields are near you, and if they allow guests, or only allow members to shoot.

Congrats on your first SG, make sure of proper stance or it will teach you. Lol, be safe and have fun.

Thank you! Kind of nervous to shoot it but I’m sure it’ll be more fun than a 223.

Don't be, I shoot mine with only 1 arm. Start off with a couple of rounds of a shooting bag, get the feel and go from there. Wide stance, your favourite leg in front of the other and lean forward and let it go. Enjoy and take your time.

If you don't know anyone who would take you out to a shotgun club and get you started then just show up, find someone in charge and tell them you are new and want to learn. I'd be very surprised if someone doesn't take you under their arm and show you the ropes!

Thanks a lot:)

To everyone who gave me some help!
