new to skeet shooting and need some advice

I'm looking to try skeet shooting in my backyard and would like a shotgun that will allow me to shoot skeet (although not designed for it). I'm just getting into shotguns so i would like one that can kill a skunk one day and shoot skeet the next day. I don't know what kind of choke i need to shoot skeet.

would the maverick by mossberg work for shooting skeet in the back yard recreationaly. it has a modified choke on it. I know very little about shotguns so any information from anyone would be appreciated. If this gun won't work please feel free to sudgest others that will, but keep in mind I'm just trying this sport and don't want to spend a large amount of cash

*edit* this first shotgun will be for recreation shooting of clay targets shot from a spring loaded thrower

It doesn't take expensive equipment to shoot skeet. Your much better off to spend a little more and get something more suitable than the Maverick. The Remington 1100 is an excellent choice with many on the used market, plus it will serve you well for about as much skeet shooting as you can handle.

Do you mean "Skeet" the game ( High House, Low House, 8 Stations), or just informal clay target shooting, i.e., clay targets thrown from a hand trap or mechanical-spring thrower (recreational/"back yard") ? ( and I hope your back yard is a big one ! )

If the latter, the Maverick will likely be just fine with a Modified choke, although you may find clay targets a little easier to hit at shorter ranges with an Improved Cylinder choke.

The vast majority of Skeet shooters today, use either an Over/Under or Auto-loader with a Skeet choke, however, a few stick with their pump guns or SxS's.

Any and all of them are capable of dispatching skunks on any given day.
 
Used My HP-9 and was hitting about 50% of them my 2nd time ever shooting clays :D

My friend who is much better at clay shooting hit about 17/25 with it...lol
 
You can use whatever floats your boat - a bolt action Mossberg shotgun even, or a single shot Cooey. Any shotgun will do what you want to do. Ask to try out the neighbour's guns. There are so many types, makes, models, configurations, gauges, etc. The most important thing is to practise.

I've used my Norinco hp9-1 (uses the Remington 870 action) for skeet and target and hunting varmint.

Great firearm!

Not for regulation skeet , no, but if someone is just interested in busting a few clays, they do alright.
There are times I don't even open our high house if I'm just going out at lunch, because our low house is in the end of the registration shack, and easily accessabel for running 5 birds or so for a little break from work!:)

Im also interested in getting into skeet. I have an 870 Police with and 18 inch barrel, hopefully this will be decent for skeet.

My question is this, do people use optics like reddot or they they not really work for skeet?

For a small price you can get another barrel about 28" that will give you a longer sighting plane and swing smoother for skeet.

Red dots don't cut as far as quick target aquisition goes.
Two beads are better....

Don't use red dot. Your one eye and the barrel are the best.
 
Thanks for the advice all. I actually went to Silverdale yestday and did skeet for my first time. I think I can now understand the '2 eyes' technique. When I 'aimed' I was often 0 for 5 on station. When I just relaxed, kinda pointed and watched the target not the sights so much I hit 4 out of 5 several times.

I videotaped it and Ill try to get it online sometime today. All I can say was wow it was a lot of fun. I think its my new favourite shooting sport!!

My 870 police has iron sights on it, the back sight is pretty sharp. My friend ripped his hand open on it twice by setting it in the rack then lazily letting his hand run up the barrel while releasing the gun, ouch.
