I picked up a 1940 Izhevsk SVT-40 a week or two ago and I have a few questions.

Can anyone point me in the direction of good information on things like markings, common problems/fixes and what/where to lubricate the rifle? Anything would be apreciated.

Also, I am planning on reloading for it so any information on reloading 7.62x54R and where to get components would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

This will help with the disassembly: Link. Be careful when you compress the main action spring when taking it apart, my friend got cut really badly on his first attempt.

Thanks. I will take a look there. I pulled the SVT-40 apart last night to give it a clean and there was a fair bit of grease in her. Wiped it down, cleaned the bore (as best I could, it looks like a couple cleanings worth of grime in there) and re-assembled. I didn't bother taking the gas piston off but I will next time I clean it.

Interesting piece of kit. Hope it shoots well.

I just bought one two weeks ago and had a scary first outing with it. First shot, slam fire, then one good shot then another slam fire. For a moment I thought I had an AVT-40. Also when I reloaded and released the cocking handle it slam fired again. 8 rounds in and have a project ahead of me. I'm sure surplus would perform better. But I'm not risking it again. Any thoughts on how I can remedy this?

SVT has a spring loaded firing pin. Make sure that it is free to retract and not fouled by dirt/grease/debris and/or bent.

Hi there!
I have stripped, cleaned and resassembled my old SVT-40 more times than I care to count. Firstly, oiling. I highly suggest oiling the rails of the bolt carrier, just a little, to help save on repeated friction and wear. As for reloading, I found I could not reload for the SVT, for many reasons, but chances are I just tried to reload it wrongly and had the wrong die sets. I also suggest a little oil never hurts on the gas rod just before it enters the reciever portion of the rifle, again to help lube things up a little.
As for Nab's comment, I'd be the friend who got cut really badly. The whole system is spring loaded, so after my first shocking dissassembly bungle, that is, I rotated the fron bolt carrier and liftted, sending the carrier cover and springs across my right hand. Ow. From that point on, I used a pillow to cover the action when doing that, which allowed the springs to release without going anywhere, especially at me. Just a tip.
As for the bump firing... I agree with Eos, it sounds like a projected firing pin issue, also, I find any ammo other than surplus does not like to feed or function properly in the SVT expecially soft point ammo.
Just my 0.02 dollars worth.

I have 2 SVT-40's & have only shot my handloads through them. After over 500 rounds fired, I have never experience a slamfire. I have had the rifle jam if I don't put the rounds carefully into the magazine. The rim of each successive case loaded into the magazine, must be in front of the one below it. Once I started doing this, I rarely have a loading problem with the SVT-40. Also set the gas valve so the case gets completely ejected from the rifle. If it is set too weak, you will get a jam & the case mouth may get damaged beyond repair.
