A High Standard .22 is a very good choice. I just picked up a magazine at my local variety store in Newmarket called " The complete book of rimfires " There is an article devoted to Hi Standard pistols.
You may have problems finding gun magazines in Toronto though.

Hi everyone. I received my PAL a few months ago and joined a club. Great fun and great people. I am from Toronto, so please don't hold it against meI am considering a .22 pistol and would like to buy a Hi Standard used for around $500, if possible. Any suggestions?

Which model of High Standard are you interested in? I picked up a Sport King (model 103, from memory) used for $225.
$500 seems like more than you should expect to pay, but I suppose it depends on the model, condition, etc.
