New to the firearms scene, a few questions regarding ammunition.

I just recently got my PAL, and I have a Mosin-Nagant on the way.

I also am planning to buy a .22LR, just to plink around with.

A local gun shop owner has told me he'd let me get a bunch of .22LR for cheap, because he basically has too much of it and wants to make room on his shelves for newer stuff, like .270WSM etc.

I guess my question is this: can I buy .22LR ammo even if I don't presently have a firearm registered in that caliber? I just wanna buy it now before all the cheap stuff goes away.
 
Buy a case of it. With .22, it's dirt cheap to begin with, and you'll use a lot of it, trust me. If you get a deal on it too, thats just a bonus!

And hey, the beauty of .22 is that you can use in in either rifle or pistol. (If you don't have your RPAL yet, go for it, it's absolutely worth jumping thru the hoops to own and shoot handguns, and as I said- .22 is cheap and tons o' fun.
 
Yep, but don't buy a case of it until you can try a box in whatever .22 you end up buying. Not all .22 ammo is equal and it may not shoot well in whatever you buy. If you buy a semi-auto, some .22 ammo may not cycle the action or shoot well out of it.

That's a very good reason to have a BUNCH of .22's - I currently have 9 .22 handguns and at least a half-dozen rifles... something that I have is bound to eat it without problems and fairly accurately!!!

i'd also be a little suspicious of any gunshop that wants to "give you a deal" on 22 ammo for whatever cause- it should be moving real well in all circumstances- and ck the local pricing - his "deal" may not be- esp if wal-mart and cdn tire also in town,and yes, you can buy ammo in whatever caliber you want, it's not THAT tightly regulated- and ck your local co-op as well as farmers get a "deal" for pest control
