Hey Everybody,

I'm just getting started and looking to buy my first pistol.
I've done a fair bit of shooting from rimfire up to the big cannons but have not owned one as of yet. Any help on breed and model i should look at would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking about starting with a .22 LR, being the cheapest to shoot and fart around with.

Ruger 22/45 MK III...retails for about $310 through Wholesale Sports.

If that's too expensive for your blood, look for a Ruger MKII used, there are lots around.

Cheapest end of the new market is a Norinco .22 Woodsman ($149 from Marstar). They can be fun, but quality is hit and miss and they're finicky with ammo - not what you want for your first foray into pistols.
 
I second the Ruger MK III 22/45. I have one and it is one of the biggest bargains in the gun world! Everyone should have one! :D

I'm having a great time with my Browning Buckmark. I was debating between the MKIII or this one. Apparently the browning is easier to clean, and Epps didn't have the MKIII, so I bought the browning.

My wife jsut picked up an MKII used and we both love it (we both shoot 9mm right now)

Damn thing is a nail driver once you get used to it.

Thing is a bit tricky to break down, but once you get it figured out it's no harder than a regular semi.

Ammo is SO CHEAP! $34 for 1000 rounds!

If you are thinking 9MM, you can't get much cheaper or reliable than a Ruger P85. Can be had around the $300 range.
 
Ruger P85 is reliable and cheap, but I found it to be very big and clunky (sorry!). I prefer something smaller like a CZ85, and you can get good quality used pieces for $400 or thereabouts.

Dont totally write off a .22 revolver either! Good and inexpensive!
 
Definately go with the Ruger. I preferred the grip angle of the 22/45 over the other Mklll's. You can even scope it for more fun :D .

yeah get the 22-45 Ruger...only get it in Stainless! Ive got one, and its much nicer. ALot of gun for little money.

You are kidding right?

The Ruger may be the best bargain but it is not the best gun. I have three Ruger .22s, a High Standard Citation, a Smith & Wesson 41, and a few other plinker 22s.

The Rugers do not have a great trigger. I call it spongy. Otherwise they are reasonably accurate. Most shooters need a lot of careful training before you can notice it though.

I like the feel of the High Standard the best but have shot my best scores (free pistol matches 50m) with the S & W model 41. They both have very good triggers (any older used gun I have seen).

If you go for a Buckmark don't shoot cheap high velocity ammunition in it. I have seen them start to peen the frame and jam up. Then you need to file it to get it to work again.
 
Ruger rimfire pistol is not high end but they are very reliable and strong and this should be what you are looking for to have a lot of run without break the bank. I personal won't buy an expensive rimfire gun becasue I can save up more for another centerfire pistol.

I got a Browning Target 5.5 and a S&W M41, both are great, accurate .22's.

Haven't tried a Ruger yet, haven't seen one at my club so far.

Go with what feels the most comfortable for your hand size and fits your budget.

Browning, Ruger, S&W.....you really can't go with any of them.
