New to the hobby, seeking recommendation for first time buyer

You will see the odd ruger 77/22 on the EE and I don’t think you would be unhappy with them. Tikka t1x and the Cz’s are both quality plikers. Don’t overlook the savage bolt actions. They might not be as pretty or refined but they are accurate and will not break the bank. My savage mk11 will shoot just as good as my ruger 77/22. The nice thing with the ruger is if you want to buy a semi the ruger 77/22 and 10/22 use the same magazines.

CZ or Tikka T1X, can't go wrong with either.

THIS, both shoot and function great and are "keep forever guns". Stay away from junk as you will want to eventually upgrade and will end up selling at a lose and spending more in the end than if you would have just bought quality to start with.

My vote would go to an older Mossberg 144 or 146-b depending whether or not you like tube or box mags. Can be found for around $300 or so and leaves you money to put toward glass. Absolutely dead nuts accurate, and extremely reliable rifles.

Right now, the best new "bargain" rifle for the money is (and has been for a number of years) the Scorpio. I owned one for a while and won a lot of competitions with it. I sold mine after obtaining a CZ452 Super Lux and a CZ 455 Military Trainer; not because the CZs were better shooters (I would rate the Scorpio about equal for both accuracy and precision) It was the wood stocks and the fact I had too many rifles.

My cousin is a new shooter, he picked up a new Scorpio from Tenda for $199.00 and an extra mag for $23, replaced the rear sight with an aperture sight that fits on the dovetail, and is shooting one hole groups with it consistently at 20 yards. The still have both in stock. BTW, not shown in the photo, but his rifle came with a threaded barrel and ad steel threaded thread protector.

Whoa, this is cool. I have never heard of this and very interesting to hear how accurate it is. For now, I think I'll keep an eye on something very classical/conservative in design and explore a little more from there. Thank you for the recommendation!

I only know the Mossberg brand as a pump shotgun, not at all familiar with the 144. After a quick glance at a google image search I do like the look of it. Amazing price too, I may keep an eye open for one.

It is a copy of an older Anschutz. Bluing is better than you would expect to see on Ruger, Savage and most other rifles. Barrels are hammer forged. Guns are very tight when new but do wear in nicely over time. Stock is very ergonomic, but gun is a bit nose heavy. My cousin drilled a hole in the rubber butt pad and added some BBs and glue to bring the point of Ballance to just ahead of the trigger guard. Great little rifle.

Low price and great quality have inspired others to customize their rifles; this can be a lot of fun too.
