I just picked up a new m305 from marstar and I was wondering what recommended upgrades if any that the rifle needs. I know they are quite good but any advice would be great, thanks.

National match op rod spring guide
M1A or M1 Garand rear sights if you plan on using iron sights
quality scope mount (like an ARMS 18) if you are planning on mounting a scope
shim the gas cylinder
bed the stock

Also, try to attend one of Barney's M14 clinics if there's one close by to you. It's well worth the money, and you'll meet a lot of great fellow CGNers.

Like Mom says, with one proviso, do all the safety checks first.
Don't assume its safe to shoot straight out of the box.

Then shoot er before you start ordering stuff, some of them are great shooters, just depends on which day of the week it was built.
A lot of the "problems" can be fixed on the kitchen table without a credit card.
Its ALL in the stickies, and lots of guys on here to help out.

Welcome to the addiction and enjoy.

Shoot it first, it will tell you what it needs.

As mentioned, shoot it before you do anything. And use good ammo.

Agreed! But, read the stickies & make sure you clean & grease the gun BEFORE your first range trip! And, NEVER put a cartridge in the chamber and let the bolt fly... (The M14 has a free floating firing pin...) You should ALWAYS load the magazine and then insert it into the gun & then you can let the bolt fly, which will strip a round from the mag & chamber it safely!

Cheers

That's some darnn good and often unmentioned advice for the "new to the m14" shooters Jay.
Always always always chamber from the magazine in these rifles.

If you end up needing parts , just have a look at the EE section its usually got something good on there that you might need, if not check out treelinem14.com lots of good parts and each item you click on will say if it can or cannot be shipped up here.

+1, and be sure to check out both milsurp and modern black rifles parts forums. Some common stuff gets posted in both.

If you don't load from the magazine, yer #### will fall off.

No seriously do load from the magazine to prevent out of battery detonation or firing. This has been documented for years and Jay & 45acpking are on point for this issue.

If you single shoot your Garand the continue to load from a clip or use a SLED ; single loading ejecting device that you can order from Creedmore Sports in San Diego for $11.00. It's worth the money, buy some other Garand or M14 products to justify yer shipping like maybe a Turner Saddlery all weather sling perhaps. :)

Cheers and welcome to the addiction

What type of grease do you recommend for the rollers?

You can use Ultra Slick White Lithium from Crappy Tire. 4.95 3 years ago, and Im just over halfway through the tube.
And amazingly my gun shoots straight, never jams and I still have me ####.
OR...you could get some fancy arse tactical grease for 3 times the price.
The trick with the grease is to put it in ALL the right places.
You cant put too much in really, its a self cleaning platform and any excess will fly off and can be washed from your clothes and wiped off your face LOL.
The only bits to keep BONE DRY is the firing pin, bolt face, and gas piston.
Hungry..aka Barney, aka Tactical Teacher used to have some wicked curved syringes which made greasing way cleaner and easier, he may still have some.
Some people are even using bearing grease etc, you could probably wipe it down with bacon fat and it would work fine and smell great.

You're right on the money with that bacon grease....mmhmm bacon..

got it yesterday, seems to function fine, the bolt seems a little loose but I'm not sure if that is normal or not. Going to shoot it next week and see if all is ok.

My bolt has a bit of back and forth play as well. I believe this is normal, but the play should be gone when you've got a round in the chamber. Should be bearing (evenly) on the receiver.
