going to pickup my first smoke pole on friday...

spanky new TC hawken .50cal flinter :D

can anyone who has a TC hawken suggest a good starting load for it?
i would like to try some round ball and hopefully some sabot's so what should i be putting on my shopping list?

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

You can make your own patches and lube or go with the pre lubed patches, but go with a good pillow ticking, not the cheap 10th cotton patches. A new rifle will most likely have sharp rifling that is tough on patches. If you want to make your own patch lube just ask, and you will see as many recipes as responses. Everyone has their own favorite. I would forget about those sabots though. Plastic has no place near a flinter. Good luck and have fun.

Sabots.....depending on the twist rate!

I would think if it's a flinter then the twist rate would be slower for round ball. Maybe 1 in 66". Sabots would not likely shoot well from this unless the twist is a "universal" 1:48". I also would not think that T/C would recommend anything other than Fg or FFG for this bore size. Even the B/P substitutes should be in FFG....good luck with it. They are great fun to shoot. Dave

Picture Picture Picture!

I'm waiting for my bonus to buy one, hopefully in February. :) Where did you get it?

everything i have read on the TC site say's 2F for anything bigger then .45cal.... mind you i did ask what others liked to shoot not what the manufacturer say's to use.... bonus to 3F would be 1 powder flask tho :)

The TC hawkin has a 1-48 twist so it should shoot just about anything i decide to stuff into it... how well it shoot's it is another matter entirely but figuring it out should be fun

thank's for all the advice so far :)
anyone else?

there is no reason not to shoot 3F in a .50 cal and you will get less fouling from it. I regularly used to shoot 3F in my .54 and actually use it in a trade gun because I get better ignition.
I think part of the equation is to keep your loads reasonalble. 50 grains of 3F is plenty for target shooting.

what a coinsidence.... my year end is paying for this one!!!
a local shop just so happens to have 1 sitting on the shelf...
hopefull i will be taking it to BC for the weekend to do some playing at the range with my buddy then i will post a couple pic's when i get back

i would like to get a deer tag this fall and put it to work but will see how i like it first... get some range and field (coyote) time with it.

thank's alot mooncoon.... think i will throw some FFFg on my shopping list... saves me trying to find FFFFg for my pan... nobody i asked around here seem's to have it?!?!

50-60gr fffg will give you a flat trajectory out to 75yds, for a dead on hold at 100yds go up to 75gr
Whereabouts do you live ? Track of the wolf has the best English flints.

Can you gets flints or patch lube ?
Cheers nessy.

x2; I always used 3F in my .50 flinter(s). When I first started out, I used 3F for shooting and priming, but as time went by, I switched to 4F for priming. Especially for hunting. The gun always went off, even tho I never got the deer...;)

i am in calgary :(

well i just could not wait so i went yesterday and picked it up.... i'm very impressed by the fit and finish of it... it's quite nice actually....

i picked up 1lb of FFFg pyrodex, some .490 speer round ball's, a powder measure, a short starter, BP solvent, bore butter, .015 pre-lubed patches, dry patches and a ramrod accessory pack... still need a pan primer and a powder horn but my wallet's light enough for now....

i played around with the lock and flint last nite trying to see if i could get it to consistently strike and the result's are marginal.... think i am going to need to track down a better flint and some FFFFg powder.... like i said before tho... no shop in calgary that i asked seem to carry FFFFg...

i know "the soldier shop" here in town has a bit of black powder stuff and also sell's flint's so i might get a line on a few of the other things i am looking for.

what a fun weekend back home..... WOW i had a blast.....
got about 20 rounds thru the hawkin on saturday (had some other things to play with at the range too), started low and worked my way from 50gr to 70gr and respectfully from 25meter's out to 100meter's.... now i see why so many people love black powder :D....

oh i also found some goex FFFFg for priming and tried a few round's with FFg as a main charge.... think i'm going to stick to the FFFg as a main and FFFFg in my pan for a while... now i just need to get used to that flash from the lock...

here's a short vid of 70gr 3f taking a pot shot at the 100M target....
