Since you live in The Queen City, you are lucky to have a club owned 1200yd range 2hrs away. The Saskatchewan Provincial Rifle Association's North Star Range in Nokomis is jut what you need to put that rifle the test. Sure you could plink at Pilot Bute, Condie or the Wildlife League ranges, but 1000yds will give you the humble-factor to shoot the rifle the way you built it.
