Heya ya'll, my name is Fil... I'm new to the site and (somewhat) new to firearms. I got my PAL a couple years ago, but didn't end up getting my first firearm until a few months ago. Ended up buying a used Savage Model 110 in .30-06 at the local gun show in Burnaby (I'm in Vancouver)... it's about eight years old, but in fantastic condition. Apparently it was barely used... a few nicks on the stock, but no marks on the barrel and (from what I can tell) minimal wear in the action. I didn't realize the amount of recoil it had and (foolishly) fired about thirty rounds with the stock plastic buttplate... I've since upgraded to a Limbsaver and added a bipod.

More recently, I purchased a used FEG P9R... it's a Hungarian-made 9mm Browning Hi-Power "copy" (in looks only... apparently the internals are more S&W). I've only taken it out to the range once, but from what I can tell it shoots pretty well... it jammed on me once, but I suspect that was more a fault of the ammunition (Winchester 115 gr) than the gun.

Anyway, having said that, it was suggested to me at the range that I check out the site, so here I am... I have got a couple questions (although I apologize if they've been covered over and over again):

How often do people clean their guns? When I bought the rifle, I was told it should be cleaned every time I took it out. Then again, IIRC, I've seen a couple spots on the net where people say you should only clean it every ###X amount of rounds. Anyone have any input? Does it vary between calibers/firearms? And it's non-corrosive ammunition...

And secondly: How much oil do people put on the moving parts of their firearms? I come from an automotive background, so from that point of view there should be oil between any two surfaces that move against each other (like between the barrel and topslide on my 9mm). Is it possible to use too much oil?

First off, welcome to the site! You may find that A) you spend way too much time on here and B) when you have access to the equiptment exchange at the bottom of the forums page, you have no money.

About the cleaning. I clean mine after most shooting sessions. A few patches down the bore, some brushing, some more patches. Scrub any areas with obvious fouling or dirt/dust until clean. A tooth brush or a toothpick for those dirty small places. Nothing anal retentive, just cleaned of goop. Re-oil with your "oil rag" to make sure everything stays clear of rust.

Oiling. Mmmmmm, I don't know pistols, so I can't say, but I understand semi autos need to be oiled or greased in certain parts of the action more than bolt actions. Many bolt actions just need a drop of grease into the bolt and they're fine. If they're going to get unusually dusty or dirty, bone dry may be better. Go with what seems logical, it's usually right.

Hey Fil, welcome to CGN!

I was shooting my .22 on the bench to your right last Tuesday when you showed me your FEG. Good to see you here.

How often to clean? There's lots of threads on that topic. But quick answer is, it varies.

My 1911 pistol gets field stripped and cleaned every 4 to 5 hundred. Completely dismantled for a thorough cleaning every couple of thousand or so.

Revolvers, every 200 they get wiped down and brushed, every couple thousand they get dunked in Ed's Red for 24 hours before brushing/wiping. Never removed sideplates on my Smiths, haven't fired the GP100 enough to clean.

Everyone's got their pet method of cleaning and lubing. Search the forums here. Let's chat next time at the range.
