New X-Bolt or stick with the BLR?

Hello folks,

Being a left handed, I wanted to buy a left hand X-Bolt last year but instead of waiting until Browning made the X-Bolt in a left hand version, I bought a BLR in a 300wsm.

I put a nice 9x39mm scope on it, went to the firing range and shot me a black bear during the fall hunting season. I am quite happy with it but now that the X-bolt is made in a left hand version, I am debating in purchasing it (in the same calibre 300wsm) and selling my BLR.

I have always been told that a bolt action is more accurate then a lever, is this correct or is it an old wives tale?

So what do you all think? BLR or X-bolt?

Much obliged for your responses.

Richard )

For the life of me I cant figure out how a company which has made some pretty nice looking guns came up with the BLR. Its unquestionably the ugliest current production rifle out their. That alone would make me want to get rid of it.

Being a lefty myself . I have a few of bolts but when it comes to a hunting situation the BLR if it feels good to you it will do its job to 300 yards if you can group 1.5 inches at 100 if you expect more get a bolt but I have had bolts that wouldnt do any better handloaded !

Not sure how to resond to your question. The BLR is working for you or so it seems.
Buy the X-Bolt and set it up without touching your BLR. If the X doesn't suit your
needs or desires, sell it and stick with ole' faithful.
As they say, "If it ain't broke..................!"
You know it's just my couple of $.02.
Looky.

I owned BLR and BAR ShortTrac before. They are very handy to hunt with and nice looking IMO. They best I can get out of them is around 1.5 MOA and not very consistent.

On the other hand, A-bolt and x-bolt are good shooters. They shoot 1 MOA or better and very predictable.

My A-bolt 300mw has a 26” barrel and is noticeably heavier. It is not well suited for stalking in the woods. The 300SWM is better.

Waiting for new products from Browning Canada is always a challenge. I waited over two years before I got my ShortTrac in 308.

As others have suggested, buy the x-bolt and then decide which one you like.

I picked up an X-bolt awhile back in 300WSM, she's a sweet rifle for sure. I also second the other poster, that for my hunting style, I much prefer the feel of the shorter package compare to it's conventional 300WinMag counterpart. Shooting 168ttsx's into tiny groups @ about 3020-3100 depending on powder.

Get the X-bolt, and scratch that itch.

I'm no BLR expert, but I thought they locked up just as tight as a bolt, and were just as capable in terms of the accuracy potential.
I agree with Kamlooky. Buy your X-bolt, set it up, try it out, all without messing with your BLR [like don't steal the scope off it or something]. Then pick the one you like best. I bet you keep both though :).

Thank you all for the comments. First I need to see how long it would take to actually get the X-Bolt into my local retailer. I hear that production has stopped due to the devastating earthquake in Japan. I might have to hold off until 2012. Now if I would shoot right handed, then no problem, they have the X-Bolt 300WSM in stock, but I'm not right handed dammit. I get a 1 1/4" grouping @ 100 yards with the BLR as it is. I just need to go to our local firing range more often to bring that down that extra 1/4". Mind you, 1/4 on a big moose won't make much of a difference.

Got my xbolt SS in 30-06 last Dec. Like the recoil pad, makes the kick nice and controllable, Consistent 1" and less groupings at 100yd.

I can't justify having both the BLR and X-Bolt, it has to be one or the other. I really like the 300wsm calibre, it has that extra range and knockdown that I want for moose and bear.
