If you were going to buy yourself a new scope for coyote hunting what would you go for? I'm looking at a new optic for the top of my .22-250 and would prefer to stay under $500.00. Was eyeing up the Vortex lineup but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm on my 4th Vortex optic, I really like the features for the price. I run the 2.5-10 Viper on my coyote rig. 2.5x is nice if your calling in the bush and you really don't need anymore then 10x unless you are making 400yrd shots.

This right here is one of the most common sense replies I have read with coyote or predator scopes. Vortex Crossfire 4x16x50 on my rig. I do like the large objective because on my 7 power on sets, I have had lots and lots of times that coyotes - Come In- or - Take away- and it is a little bit easier to find them in panic or follow them.

I use a 6-24x42 on my 25/06. Most shots are across fields and open areas. The gun fits well enough I don't feel handicapped with it.
If hunting in bush I prefer smaller lower powered scopes like my elite 2-7x32 or fixed 2.5 or 4 power
It depends how and where you hunt
A Lot of my coyote hunting is done with shotguns

I put a Minox 3-15x42 on my rifle. Basically for the same reason stated above. At 3 power you are good for the up close stuff. At 15, which is quite a bit, you need a good rest and are good for the long distance stuff.
I had a scope with the side focus but thought that it was just one more thing I had to do. You can just leave it at 100 or what have you, but thats not the idea.
The minox scopes go on sale all the time and are a great value for the money. I also know you can not go wrong with a nikon.

Find yourself a used Bushnell Elite 4200 in 2.5-10 or 4-16. You always get a lot more bang for your buck buying used and should be able to find those in the EFF at $350-ish for a 2.5-10 and a 4-16 for about $50-$100 more. I have both and they are my go-to scopes for great clarity and repeatable adjustments at a very reasonable price. I'd actually lean toward the 2.5-10x as that's all the power you'll ever need for calling coyotes in this area and it would serve very well on a deer rifle or muzzle loader too if you wanted to transfer it for those few weeks and save buying multiple optics. Don't bother searching or paying extra for a 50mm objective, 40mm is plenty.

My Vortex is great.
Have since put vortex on every rifle.

My hubting rifles take a lot of banging and bush walking and they hold up nicely.

Used ogg EE and you still get lifetime warranty.

I am a real Leupold fan myself since Deerdr introduced me to them a few years ago. Leupold makes Redfield as well and you get a lot of bang for your buck with them including lifetime warranty. Take a look at the Revolution line. They are basically equivalent to the VX2 line in features at a better price.

I am looking at swapping out the scope on my 22-250 as well. I am currently running 6-18x44AO and it is much more scope than needed for a coyote rifle. I will be going to a 4.5-14x50 VX3L. We don't hunt bush here much, most shots are open country so 4.5 should be good for the low setting.

Most importantly make sure you have some low range on the scope. I have a 3-9 on one rifle and a 4-16 on another. Most of the time they don't make it off of the bottom number. Even a fixed 4 power would be fine. Predator hunting is not varmint hunting. I have used a 6-24 in the past and there is nothing wrong with it. I just prefer the wider fov of the lower power scopes.

I got a Vortex DB 4-16 on my 204 and I think its just about perfect for me with that rifle.

The best I would say, is if you can try out a few of your buddies in different power ranges and see which one suits you the best. Like you can see just in this thread that there is a difference in ranges.

Also it would be good to know what kind of environment you would be shooting in.

Personal opinion stick to a low power range scope 2-7 or 3-9 look for good light transmission, clarity and large FOV. I stay away from drop compensating reticles a to. The KISS principal in play. Shooting at paper targets is not like shooting at coyotes under hunting conditions. jMO

When I lived in the Timmins Ont area years ago there was not a lot of open long range predator hunting. Even on the farms we hunted most of our hunting was on the bush edges and shots beyond 200 yards were rare as the animals tended to prefer to stick to cover. I carried a Browning A-Bolt 22-250 with a fixed 4X Bushnell on our predator hunts back then. Sometimes I wonder why I ever sold it? It was a great lightweight accurate hunting set-up.
