Well another western nation falls to impending steel shot. I understand only some parts of Australia presently as well. Many Western European nations are following this lead save the UK.
At least in NZ there is some sanity. Steel and non toxic shot only applies to 12 and 10 gauge by year 2020 migratory and within 200 meters body of water.
Anyone else following this?

I was resisting the change when the non-toxic regs came in for Canadian waterfowl. Don't miss shooting lead any more though. Modern steel loads are effective, price competitive, and actually may help prevent some poisonings. I originally thought it might be Ok to prevent ducks for eating lead on the bottom of ponds, but couldn't get on board for field shooting. What finally convinced me was after a field shoot that was far from water, we went home without finding one of the geese we had shot. I went back a few hours later for one last look, and found three eagles feeding on the dead goose. They would have been poisoned if I was using lead. So I use steel or other non-toxic shot for all waterfowl hunting since, even if hunting far from water. I use bismuth or tungsten matrix shot in a coupe of valuable old doubles, the rest get fed cheaper high velocity steel. No complaints.
