newb 30-06 vs 308 vs 300wm?

When I bought my first rifle I wanted a Winchester M70 chambered in 300wm. Why because I spent hours and hours looking at the ballistic charts and yes sir the 300wm is the winner by far. Second choice was a 338wm and third was the lowly 30-06

So off to the gun shop I go and low and behold they had a new M70 in the rack but it was a 30-06, bummer. I told the shop keeper that I really wanted a 300wm. He looked at me kinda funny and said "Good Lord man what are you hunting that a 30-06 won't kill?" I just shrugged since I was young and didn't really have an answer.

Anyway long story short I bought the 30-06 and 47 years later I'm still shooting moose with that old beat up rifle and not once did I feel under gunned.

Yes the 30-06 is boring but it just works.

Agreed

A Winchester M70 in 30-06 is a very rare bird in the EE for obvious reasons. A very popular rifle in a very popular caliber.

Owners that have them have absolutely no reason to get rid of them.
