Hi guys, I am seeking your opinions on AR firing pin retaining pins. Took apart my BCG for my NEA in 7.62 x 39 to clean it. Couple of annoying things, it's a bugger to install without bending one of the pin prongs...so I have set it up in a vice and used a dental pick to pull the two prongs together as I pushed it in to keep the alignment....and there still seems to be a a few thou protruding out at the insertion (the looped part) IE about the thickness of a fingernail. I'm not a fan of an improper fit as it will lead to unnecessary wear. I've cycled the bolt and can see where it is rubbing on the receiver, ever so slightly since there is a bit of clearance in the action for the BCG....

Question 1) What are you guys doing to install the pin properly?

Question 2) What solutions have you come up with for a replacement? IE solid pin vs cotter pin.

Question 3) HOw often are you guys taking apart the BCG for cleaning?

thanks in advance Gunners!

Marc

1. I push it in. Buy parts that are in spec.

2. Buy replacement firing pin retaining pins.

3. What is your definition of cleaning? I take it apart and wipe off and re-lube. No scrubbing.

The NEA pins are garbage. Throw them out and get one from a decent manufacturer.

Do not force it. As if one of the legs bend, it's a b*tch to remove. I picked up an NEA x39 upper with a bent FPRP and even the replacement FPRP from NEA would not fit properly. Pulled one out of another AR, and it went in with little effort.

Whatever. I've had exactly the same prob as the OP with DPMS carriers and other parts. Sometimes the split pin is difficult to get into place and if it gets bent out even the slightest but it is a real ##### to get in properly.

Norc's are notorious for this. I had to buy some spare retaining pins. Funny, when I had my Colt AR15A2 Sporter I never had this problem.....

DPMS is a known manufacturer of disgusting #### so I don't know where you're going with this...

It should not be hard to install. NEA sent out some carriers in the past that had out of spec parts. This cause too much resistance against the firing pin making it hard to remove and replace. NEA has a lifetime warranty, send it back in hopes that they will send you an in tolerance bolt carrier. Good luck.

I have never had this issue despite handling and cleaning dozens of Diemaco C-7 rifles before annual technical inspection. That being said Diemaco makes a top quality rifle.

The problem is most likely the pin. They are too large for some reason. I had one, tried it in other BCGs in addition to the NEA, then threw it out because they didn't insert smoothly in any of them.
