I've been wanting an M-14 for a while, but I don't know much about milsurp rifles. Can you educate me a little. I want to make this into a tacticool/long range rifle.

Hungry here: Ferget the Takticool shzt and tweak it into something YOU like. That tacticool krap is for the black rifle shooters who prefer to look at themselves in da mirror (mirror kommando) instead of developing their marksmanship skills at our Service Rifle matches AND away from the 100meter KOMMANDO types, who are just a cut above the Airsoft Kommando-M4 cuts in my upper receiver- or else my #### will fall off- kommando. Wow, that was a mouthful! Howzat for a run-on sentence ? ;)

You wanna see a great shooting Norinco-stinko M14? Just PM Ton45, he got off the 50meter Kommando Klub and showed up for a Service Rifle match in May/June. Then in July he roared back to win the "Top Tyro" award with his Chu wood stocked M14 and KICKED my Hairy ASS !! And yes, he's over the mirror kommando kulture over in Quebec, because he does have shooting talent!!

How much money does it take to make an $399 Norinco M-14 into a 1 MOA shooter, is this asking too much? For those who do get them shooting accurate what kind of ammo do you use? Obviously milsurp ammo isn't the greatest for accuracy. Can you use .308 in this rifle without going above the pressure limit?

Yes you can shoot commercial .308 in yer M14 boomstick all you want, because I have done this lots (free ammo from rich 100m Kommando people at Sharon Gun Club back in the 1980's) and my #### is still on my person. Lots of people on this board and that board will remind you NOT to shoot commercial ammo or else yer #### will fall off, but come to my clinic and hear it live from me....

Your first step should be to take this question up to the Main Battle rifles section, which is about 5 floors up on the main index. Read through some of the previous threads there.....there will be enough info there to keep you busy for a month.
I just ordered one of these rifles today from Marstar. If you have been thinking about getting one it is likely best not to wait...Marstar claims this is the last shipment and that Norinco will no longer be making any more of these. Of course, you could wait a month and then get stuck paying twice the price for whatever remains out there.

this question has been raised many times before. Ball park seems to be..... 1500 to 3000 and up....including cost of rifle, to get a consistant long range shooter.... you would be swapping out all parts but the original receiver.... which is an excellent receiver to begin a build with.
the build i have coming up will see a stock norc stripped and rebuilt
krieger barrel = 675.00
new trw bolt = 275.00
ss guide rod = 45.00
usgi spring = 16.00
new usgi unitized gas system 375.00 (with titanium gas piston)
m14 lockbar rear sight 165.00
HR trigger assembly new in wrap 175.00
Smith enterprise vortex flash hider 140.00
smith enterprise gas lock navy sight 80.00
haven't pick a scope mount but it'll probably be an arms mount so 300 i figure.
will keep original receiver and op rod only

then i have to build my shorty

I want to make this into a tacticool/long range rifle.

Tons of info in the stickies. Start reading :) I had too....

Making it Tacticool.. No Prob.

Long Range... ummm.. What is long range? I hope you don't think you will be doing 1000yards with it! It should be a solid 1 1/2" MOA out to 500yards.

If you want more than that. Say 1"MOA out to 700-1000yards, buy a Bolt Rifle.

I totally realize that a bolt rifle is better for long range but I did some reading and I thought I read somewhere m-14's are capable of 800+.

Yes they are capable of 800m plus, but with a 20" or 22" M14 barrel , why disadvantage yerself ? Like we've said before, you want a MOA tackdriver ? Then buy a M700P, Savage FP10, Tikka Taktikal, SAKO TRG, Win M70 Stealth , FN SPR A1, etc. Save your money and buy some more good glass and practice ammo, then come out to our Precision (read: sniper) Rifle matches hosted by YOUR Provincial Rifle Association... that's if they are active in this discipline, but I'm forever trying to convince the 100m Sniper Kommandos to come out past 200m and shoot up to 800m or 900m, to discover their true potential of their (needlessly fancy) sniper rigs. Yeah, build your M14 into an M25 rig for another $ 2000, but you will never recover that money. Then when you show up to my OSA Sniper matches, you are gonna get yer ass kicked by my wife's M700P (in .223, no less) at 600m because she's an excellent wind reader, and also very smooth on the trigger. And we only paid $ 1059 plus taxes for that rig. Oh, I forget to mention that she's mounted a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x Mildot (cost me $ 200) on top, and she can still rock many guys on this board. :D

45acpking with all those mods you will be doing what do you expect for accuracy??

When you do your research on this site, pay particular attention to what Hungry has to say.
It is possible to spend a LOT of money on a M305. It is also possible to have a really good shooting rifle without investing a fortune. Forget tactikewl, unless you want to play dressup for the sake of playing dressup. There are lots of fashionable accessories that do little to make the rifle a better shooter. Before spending a cent, ask yourself if the trinket is actually going to make the rifle shoot better.
The basics include might well include insuring that the rear sight is functionning properly if you are not going to install a scope; making sure the barrel is indexed properly; replacing the guide rod; shimming the gas system; basic trigger work -getting rid of park. on the engaging surfaces, and lubing; tightening up the operasting rod guide; bedding the barrelled action into the stock.
It can be argued that money spent on ammunition and range time can contribute more to your shooting skills than sinking a load of money into the rifle.

Not to hijack the tread but never been interested in these China copy so i am also newb in these M-305/M-14. this might change...

Just a few question about these rifles:
1- What is the shortest barrel you can have or cut it to in respect of the system?

Hungry here: 18.5" of course, but keep it about 1" longer just to cover yer legal butt. You can always cut more off (for threading, different flash hiders), but you can't add more barrel on.

2- what will be the overall length of the rifle in that case? any picture?

All depends on yer stocks, have a look at the photograph forum regarding the M14's, M1A's, and M1 Garands THREADS

3- I see Marstar have some new stock (AR alike) and wondering if there is other less expensive stock? link please!

4- I swear to never buy Chinese cheap thing again but this one seems to be an exception right?

Don't buy ONE ! Buy TWO of the damn things before the kommunists run out of high school students to assemble them in Shop Class LOL !!

5- What is the stock precision MOA? if I cut the barrel what can I expect?

Right now , box stock accuracy with milsurp blasting ammo hovers around 1.5" to 2.0", depending on YOUR benchrest technique. Mysticplayer and Navyshooter have experimented with match bullets and my M14 clinic suggested tweaks and they have achieved some groups inside 1 MOA and some around 1.25" MOA. Accurate enough for minute-of-moose. Hey, whaddaya expect for $ 400 ? If you cut the barrel, expect some loss in velocity, and a teeny bit on accuracy depending upon your selection of handloading components (match/hunting bullets, primers, women you slept with, yada yada yada). Just ensure that yer #### don't fall off incase you hafta buy CCI # 34 primers (that's another inside joke from the Calgary M14 clinic last weekend)

Time for you to do some sticky reading and some searching for ANY posts by : Navyshooter, Skullboy, Girlsgunsandfastbikes, and Lazerus2000, not to mention MOI.... :D

I am a tall guy and like short rifle. Guess you can't made a pistol out of it but just curious. should be loud too...

as far as "cheap" chinese, where norinco is concerned , you're closing your mind to an awful lot of things that are good and or better quality than SOME of the north american firearms- the m305 ( even springfield had issues with their m1a being out of spec a few years back) and the m1911a1( lots of guys stateside use these for custom builds) - the absolute FIRST thing to do with a gun is to SEE HOW IT SHOOTS right out of the box and SEE HOW IT FITS- i'm only 5'8 and i find the STOCK m14 fits me just fine- the only thing i would fit is a fiberglas stock- and you can gain a lot with LOAD development as far as accuracy goes- i started with one of the "match" recepies and varied up and down the scale with each component until i established where the "sweet spot" was- as far as the stock goes, the marstar is probably one of the best values for the money- the others cost MORE-not less if you must have that kind of stock- i've found out, through experience that the STANDARD STYLE of stock- the non-folder/telescoper- is actually QUICKER by a considerable margin to deploy than the "fancy " styles- unless you actually have a "need" to fit that rifle into a confined space, i find it kind of useless- and yes. i DO have both styles- my "shorty" is an m1a style bush with the folding aft stock( it's really an m14 in a springfield bush stock- a H&r
looks like a mini 14 folder on steroids)

1) It's not an M-14. It's a commercial copy.
2) It's already "tacticool". ALL aftermarket "tactical" stuff is just a means of separating you from your money. The term 'tactical' is the current marketing buzz word. It used to be 'Police'.
3) 18.5" barrels significantly increase the muzzle blast and noise. And the velocities will drop. The .308/7.62 was designed to use a 22" barrel. You'll get the best accuracy with that length. Of course, good ammo is essential. Milsurp, if you can find it, isn't made for great accuracy.

Can you just buy one of the things and not spend all the extra, and still shoot it and have fun?

Hungry Here: YES, you can. I keep trying to get you guys to save your money and come out to our matches. Just look at Ton45 here on this board. This spring he showed up with a Norinco M14, the only mod he made was mount a scope to the front barrel (handguard) area and then he bought another 20/5 rd magazine to compete in our Service Rifle matches. This July he shot above 510 points (out of 600) and trashed my ass at this game. A perfect example of focusing on performance instead of looking at yourself (with your boomstick & CQB setup) in the mirror. :D

I respect your knowledge Hungry, but if somebody wants to spend money on the looks of a gun, theres nothing wrong with that. I like nice things, cool things. So telling people to save their money is only a matter of opinion. And just like you said in the first post you edited of mine, "build something YOU want". Well, I want a cool looking M14. So someday I will build one. And I don't put face paint on and do commando poses in the mirror either. Again, I respect your extreme knowledge with the M-14 and rifles in general, so don't flame me to bad.

Besides, I can find a lot worse ways to waste money.
