Hey everyone,

I'm a newb hunter so please bear with me. I'm hoping to head out to Rock Creek to try turkey hunting in a couple weeks and was wondering if you guys could give me some basic tips to get me started.
First off i have an 870 clone in 12gauge with an 18.5" barrel and cylinder bore. I know it's not the best choice of shotgun for the task, but it's all I have at the moment. What type of terrain should I be looking for? Open fields, marsh, dense bush? Would prime time be at dawn & dusk like hunting deer? Or do them gobblers roam around in the afternoon as well? In the past I've been able to approach grouse and take shots at spitting distance. But I hear turkey's are quite alert, so what distances would I realistically be expecting to take a shot? I'd like to purchase ammo accordingly. Thanks in advance!

cylinder bore might be a tad big since most people use xx ful
during the spring i had a blind set up in the bush line with my decoys in an open field
I like federal premium stuff so i use that in a number 6 with the flitecontrol wad it great, but the remington 4x6 shot seems good too, i like the idea of both #4 and 6 shot in the same shell

Last bit of advice,
wait till spring

turkey is hard enough in the spring, even harder in the fall

Hmmm... from the sounds of it I might be better off with a .22cal rifle. After checking out the links fratri posted it seems a lot of people pattern their shotguns for distances of 30-40yards for turkey. I don't see my shotgun patterning effectively at that range. I think I'll take your advice and wait for spring. In the meantime I'll try to find a more suitable barrel for my shotgun and try out different shots at the range. :)

Thanks for the tips guys, appreciate the help!
