Newb question- any dies in any press?

Can dies from different manufacturers generally be used in presses made by other manufacturers?
Thanks

Yes, 7/8-14 TPI IS standard die and press thread size. A few extra-large diametr cartridges like 50 BMG ad 577 Snider require larger diameter dies and press.

As above - I have an older RCBS RockChucker press - has a "large" thread in top, then a reducing bushing screwed in that goes down to 7/8" x 14 threads per inch - my former RCBS "JR" press only had the 7/8" x 14 threads on top - we have had dies from 22 Hornet to 458 Win Mag screwed into that reducer - all work fine - brands on shelf include Lyman, RCBS, Lee Precision, Bonanza (!), Hornady - all seem to fit. Besides the die set, you also need the correct shell holder for that cartridge - it goes into the press ram to hold the cartridge to go up into, and pull out of, the die. Is also multiple accessories that screw into those 7/8" x 14 tpi threads - Lyman "M" dies, RCBS collet bullet puller, de-capper, primer pocket swager, plus various Lee Precision Factory Crimp Dies and the Larry Willis collet die.

I do believe the Dillon square deal presses use their own specific dies

This is the only thing I can think of as well. I have an RCBS and have screwed dies from all brands into it without issue. Minus of course the Dillion dies.

However you only tend to see those for sale in the quick change plates for a dillon press so not likely something you will need to worry about too much :)

Not all Dillon presses, only the square deal is unique. I believe the very old Lyman or Ideal presses had a different (smaller) die size as well but I can't remember what the actual thread size was.
Anything else made in the last 60 years besides the .50 cal class are all standardized.
Having said that, I have had some issues with different shell holders in hand primers.

Shell holders vary a little between press manufacturers I find. RCBS, and Lee work easily, Lyman is a tough fit, and some won't go in. Might just be my presses though. - dan

Lyman’s small dies are called 310 dies. The tong tool is still made and a few different sets are still available new. The presses have been discontinued. Larger size dies are available but you need a press that takes them, I believe 1 1/4”. Old style RCBS shell holders are normally the ones that won’t fit my RCBS hand primer.
Die manufacturers have standardized on the 7/8” size for dies.
