Sorry for such a newb question, but I cannot get the search function to cooperate tonight.

Why two apetures on the "L" shaped bar that rocks forward and rearward on the rear iron sights on the AR15? Are they different sized openings, or is one higher than the other for further distances?

Sometimes. Depends on the sight.

Some have the smaller aperature raised for longer range, some have two equal height holes where the smaller one is intended for 'fine' work, the other for reduced visibility, CQB, etc.

Look to see if they are both on the same plane and let us know.

In the picture I was looking at, in the rocked forward position you can see an "L" stamped on the bar immediately under the apeture hole. Does that help identify what that one is?

Big aperture : close range shooting, small aperture : long range shooting. What is close range and long range : Army guys I spoke to said they use the proper aperture size in order to see the enemy's body.

Personnaly I only use the small apperture since I only shoot paper.
